Re:
What are the challenges that people whom have repetitive motion and pain
disorders face, and what procedures and technologies are available to help people
with these disabilities conquer their challenges?
Being a group of muscular conditions, pain disorders and repetitive motion come from repeated
motions occurring as a result of routine work or daily activities (Webmd.com). Additional names
describing repetitive disorders include repetitive trauma disorders, repetitive strain injuries and
overdue syndrome. In the United States, repetitive disorders are highly happening. Repetitive
motion disorders are the most common in the United States. The condition is showing by
numbness, pain, tingling, redness, or swelling of the affected area, and the loss of strength
(Web.eecs.umich.edu (N/A). Repetitive motion disorders may result from incorrect motion,
overaction, and friction from the muscle fatigue (Mazanec, 2019). RMDs are as well caused by
too many continuous repetitions of a motion or an activity. The disorder occurs most frequently
within the hands, elbows, wrists, by may as well happen in the back, neck, hips legs, feet, and
ankles. The disorder may result in a temporary or permanent damage to the body soft tissues.
Repetitive motion disorders are often believed to as work-related, but they may occur due to
academic, household, or part-time activities.
Purpose: the objective of this paper is to examine various challenges faced by people with
repetitive motion and pain disorders face, and the technologies plus procedures accessible to assist
individuals with these disabilities conquer their challenges.
Demographics
There exists a difference ratio between statistics and fact about repetitive motion disorders. Since
2008, approximately 50% of the whole industrial injuries within USA are come from overuse the
body after disorders. 6 out of 10 office employees experience wrist pain (ergonomictrends.com).
Professional dancers, athletes, and musicians are having highly possibility within the repetitive
motion disorders. Relating to the RMDs, the research has mentioned that about a million American
workers were treated in 1999 due to the work-related pain. Other experts have estimated that
muscle disorders cost the economy of the United States between $45 and $54 billion per year
(cdc.gov).
Triggers of symptoms and behaviors
•
•
Soft Tissue Damage -Repetitive motion disorders are cause by different aspects. However,
the soft tissue will be the basic element to cause the repetitive motion disorders
(thephysiotherapyclinics.com (N/A).
Nerve Compression – Some repetitive motion conditions are cause by the condition of
surrounding nervous system. Within a pressure from neuropathy, a nerve is injured through
compression as it experiences a fibrous or bonny tunnel (Kirkhorn and Guilia, 2006).
2
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of repetitive motion disorders depend on the precise disease and the body
location that if affects.
•
•
•
•
Symptoms including numbness, pain, redness, tingling, and a lessened range of motion of
the affected part of the body.
Feelings of weakness or fatigue in the hands, arms, or legs
Other related symptoms may comprise swelling, strength, and loss of flexibility.
Popping or clicking sound coming out from the body. Constant cracking is coupled with
consistent pain or swelling may be a sign that something is wrong
(health.clevelandclinic.org. (2016).
Challenges faced by people with repetitive motion and pain disorder
Student with this kind of disability will face various challenges in their life. They encounter
problems in using most of equipment because of the pain. They cannot easily to get special
equipment to help them in time and make them hard to move from one place to place. Another
challenge that student with such disabilities face is that of difficulties using their hands to make
notes, and that makes their learning become very complicated.
Moreover, when their ability from taking the notes in the class become a challenge, their learning
process will become a challenge too. As a result, they are not even able to focus on their knowledge
and cause the poorly performance in school. The poor performance of students with such
disabilities will eventually affect the general performance of the university.
Behaviors obstacles to learning
There are various behaviors obstacles to education. Since the parts most frequently affected by
RMDs are the legs, hands, and wrists, the disorder will often lead to obstacles with recording
information, either by typing or handwriting. It might allow students have to type or write within
short periods and have to rest often. This can result in numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity to
touch (Web.eecs.umich.edu (N/A). In addition, students might struggle with any manual activity
that needs using upper limbs, such as carrying tools and books, and participating in manual activity.
Moreover, the affected students might find it hard using their hand because of the pain in the affect
hand. As result, they must stay at home because of excessive pains in the affected parts.
The procedures and technologies available to help people with these disabilities conquer their
challenges
Through technology and supportive services, disabled students are able to take their social
responsibility and go on to complete their school. The assistive technology’s services and products
can facilitate the disabled persons to use their ability. Assistive Technology (AT) is any gadget,
system or design employed by persons to accomplish tasks that could otherwise be challenging or
impossible (at-aust.org)
According to Martinez (2019), the Affective Computing Group are focusing on developing novel
technologies that can deeply impact people’s lives at the physical and emotional levels (Martinez,
2019). Assistive technology can improve the life for the disabled person also their family members.
3
The priority of using assistive technology is to fulfill all ADA’s obligations and their feasible ways.
For a lot of persons with disabilities, assistive technology implies the difference between exclusion
and inclusion, between rights of losing and rights of enjoyment.
ADA requirements for accommodating someone with the disability in an educational setting
Through accommodations, the student who was disabled but has ability to learn, are given the
equal chances to gain the knowledge from the education, just as well as their non-disabled
classmates. The obligation to give accommodation for disabled students is still a well-known idea.
A significant number of the financed learning equipment in the past, have been following by
identical responsibilities for several decades, in according to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The
1973 Rehabilitation Act was the original disability civil rights law to be enacted in the United
States that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal
financial assistance (dredf.org). ADA’s primary goal is to ensure disabled people can back to
United States’ traditional society. One key progress for disabled students is through giving them
an equal opportunity to learn. The school’s obligation is to provide accommodations with potential
as well as registered students, workers, members of the public who might intent to attend public
activities or events supported by the college, and to any other person who is qualified to participate
in, register in or profit from the school’s programs, activities or services. A best way for school to
ensure that persons with disabilities can have equal right is through providing accommodations for
eligible persons with disabilities. Accommodations are an essential part of meeting the ADA
requirements.
The ADA necessities for accepting disabled individuals in a learning setting comprise:
•
•
•
•
•
Modifications to practices, policies, or procedures
Changes to a classroom setting or task that allow a learner with a disability to take part in
the learning process.
Exclusion of architectural barricades
Provision of supporting aids and services
Additional changes or adaptations that facilitate a learner to enjoy the privileges and
benefits of the college’s activities, program, or services.
Best practices for the accommodation of the disability in an educational setting
The modern world’s academic experts emphasize the importance of doing physical exercises in
addition to value the disability etiquette across academic settings. They also stress the significance
of providing all classroom accommodations to the disabled students. It is necessary for school
facilities to always consider aiding and host disabled students. (National Center for Learning
Disabilities (NCLD). Different disabled students need clearly accommodations in order to learn
and be part of the learning process. The good accommodations are offering service to the individual
student and avoiding fail from general course. In addition to recommending the disabled students
to attend the necessary class, instructor should let them know the convenient of the
accommodations in the early class. Getting involved early enough can help instructor to build a
practical learning strategy for the entire quarter or semester and share any future schedule between
the student and instructor. Those disabled students having different background, so the classroom
should be identified as exclusive and respective. Therefore, it is significant to have a best way to
provide the disabled student an accommodation in an educational setting.

Primary Research plan
Rational
Repetitive motion and pain disorders are a group of muscular conditions that arise from repeated
motions completed during daily activities or routine work. Repetitive motion disorders are the
most widespread within the United States. Repetitive motion disorders may result from incorrect
posture, overexertion, and friction emerging from muscle fatigue. The disorder may lead to a
permanent or temporary damage to the soft tissues within the body. Repetitive motion and pain
disorders causes learning challenges making learning very hard for students. As a result, there are
available assistive technologies that can help students overcome the challenge.
Research Question
What SVSU can do to help students with repetitive motion and pain disorders to enable them type
and take notes?
Purpose
To determine the best technologies available to help students with theses disabilities conquer their
challenges. What technology can help carpal tunnel syndrome & cubital tunnel syndrome?
Technologies Suggested
•
•
Adapted pencil grips and holder’s technology
Wrist brace technology
Research Methods (See Appendix 2)
To complete the research, Pengcheng will select a sample model of 30 students with carpal tunnel
syndrome & cubital tunnel syndrome in SVSU. The students will be provided with the adapted
pencil grips and holder’s technology and the wrist brace technology. They will use the technology
for a period of 30 days consistently. After the 30 days, they will be provided with a form with the
evaluation plan rubric like the one on Appendix 2. They will fill the form from their experience of
using the relevant technology for the 30 days. After that, the collected data from the 30 students
will be analyzed to establish the functionality, user-friendliness, reliability, supportive-nature and
economic-feasibility of the relevant technologies.
Moreover, Pengcheng will review websites that vend the Adapted pencil grips and holder’s
technology and the Wrist brace technology. He will consider all the verified negative reviews and
positive reviews. He will use the reviews to establish the functionality, user-friendliness,
reliability, supportive-nature and economic-feasibility of the relevant technologies. After the
analyzing the reviews, and considering the remarks from the 30 students, he will be capable to
make a conclusion as regards functionality, user-friendliness, reliability, supportive-nature and
economic-feasibility of the two technologies.

Research result
There are two technology can help repetitive motion disorder student using their hand normally
to write or type in the class. Which are pencil grips holder (See Figure 1) and wrist brace (See
Figure 2). These two technologies have different use, but both can reduce the pain for repetitive
motion disorder students and help them back to the class like normal student. Pencil grips holder
can let repetition motion disorder students take the notes easily, and wrist brace can help them
type easily.

Pencil grips holder is a tool can assist people writing the notes. It can fix user’s fingers into the
holders within correct position and reduce their secondary injured from the repetition motion
disorder. By using the pencil grips holder, it only need takes two steps. First, put the pencil grips
holder over the pencil, and leave it 1 inch above the head of the pencil. Second, place the thumb
and index finger into the holders. Then, it is available to use. It is also very cheap, and
convenient to carry. However, it does not have a high reliability score, because it has to match
the body size of the pencil. For example, if the body of pencil was too tight or too loose, the
pencil grips holder cannot put over the pencil. There has no negative affect for repetitive motion
disorder students to use pencil grips holder during the learning process, because it is easy to use,
and the students can carry it to anywhere.
Wrist brace is a tool can assist people using their hand freely. It can reduce the pain from both
carpal tunnel and wrist, and it also wear comfortable. Therefore, repetitive motion disorder
students can use wrist brace to type without pain and turning difficult. It is expensive than pencil
grips holder but has more functional than pencil grips holder. The students can also wear wrist
brace to participle the manual activity. Same as the pencil grips holder, repetitive motion
disorder students will not get negative impact from wearing the wrist brace during the learning
process, because it was wearing so comfortable, and it was working well.
Recommendation
In most situation, both pencil grips holder and wrist brace can be used together. Such as taking
the notes and drawing a picture. However, both of technologies are safety and can prevent most
of pain from repetitive motion disorder. Therefore, SVSU students can enjoy their class without
worry about the repetition motion disorder. A good suggestion for the SVSU is selling both of
technologies in their bookstore and offer discount for the disabled student. That will help their
students can find their needs in short periods time and save the money, because the pencil grips
holder is hard to find in the retail store. In each classroom, SVSU should ready for these two
9
technologies to repetitive motion disorder students, especial in the exam day. These can help
SVSU provide a fair accommodation for disabled student and help them successful in the class.
In the future, SVSU can provide a pre-class for all new student, teach them how to get assistance
from the SVSU, and where they can get the technologies support, and so on.
Call to action
Pengcheng was grateful to whoever will spend some time to read this secondary research paper.
It has clearly been done for all readers who would like to understand more about repetitive
motion disorders particularly those that affect the hands. Pengcheng looks forward to getting
reader’s responses which may be criticisms about some parts of the research and the manner to
improve on such parts. Any discussion about the paper will improve Pengcheng’s research
progress. Pengcheng will really appreciate to get any kind of feedback from any reader since that
