Humanities Project – Thesis and Outline
Introduction
“Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Space is the breath of Art.” – Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the greatest architects of all time using interior and exterior spaces as one. Ralph Waldo Emerson was a famous essayist of the romantic age, where self-development was the theme, and self and nature are one.
Thesis statement: Although both men had different professions, they were both inspired by the ideas of transcendentalism and their creations, philosophy, and relationship with life and art are guided by those ideas.
Transcendentalism’s core belief is in the inherent goodness of people and nature.
Transcendentalism is a system developed by the writings of Immanuel Kant, a philosopher. It is based on the idea that in order to understand the nature of reality, you must first examine and analyze the reasoning process that governs the nature of experience (“Transcendentalism,” 2019).
Transcendentalism is a philosophical movement that developed in the late 1820’s and 1830’s in the Eastern United States (“Transcendentalism,” 2019).
Transcendentalism has been influential in American literature, art, architecture, religion, and philosophy.
Transcendentalists are strong believers in the power of the individual. It focuses primarily on personal freedom (Goodman, 2019).
Transcendental Club was a discussion group formed by Ralph Waldo Emerson and others for disaffected young Unitarian clergy (Goodman, 2019).
Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement.
Emerson’s beliefs were formations of Transcendentalism, a belief system that espouses a non-traditional appreciation of nature (“Transcendentalism,” 2019).
Transcendentalist focus on natural things in the world as a part of one differentiated, living system, a naturalist (Lulos & Langosh, n.d.).
Naturalists are balancing that introspection with a scientific and spiritual connection with nature transcending the barrier between self and nature (Lulos & Langosh, n.d.).
Emerson published his first essay “Nature,” dividing nature into four usages: commodity, beauty, language, and discipline (“Nature (essay),” 2019).
These distinctions define how humans use nature for their basic needs, their desire for delight, their communication with one another and their understanding of the world (“Nature (essay),” 2019).
Emerson argued that philosophy, art and morality out to be derived from one’s soul, which was connected to that of all man-kind (Lulos &Langosh, n.d.).
Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator who believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, which was a philosophy he called organic architecture (“Frank Lloyd Wright,” 2019).
Wright celebrated the beauty of nature in a literal sense, believing that the world’s creatures and landscapes are intrinsically beautiful in their own right (Cronon, 1994).
Wright declared once to his apprentices that nothing was more detrimental to an architect’s vision than to have “deep in his heart one wish and have to conform to the conditions and demands of another” (Cronon, 1994, p. 13).
“Organic Architecture” was a phrase coined by Wright, which was architecture that is famous for designing structures that blend into their surroundings in innovative ways (Hooray, 2016).
Fallingwater, one of Wright’s most famous residences, was constructed over a thirty- foot waterfall (“Frank Lloyd Wright,” 2019).
Fallingwater was designed to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings (“Frank Lloyd Wright,” 2019).
Use of glass connected occupants with nature (“Frank Lloyd Wright,” 2019).
Conclusion
As you can see the architectural works of Frank Lloyd Wright incorporate nature into his designs, an element that Ralph Waldo Emerson felt as a transcendentalist, non-traditional appreciation of nature and personal freedom.
Architecture in today’s society is incorporating more nature into their building instead of taking it out.
