Your task is to find something that you consider poetry because it is poetic and connects to you personally. This example may take nearly any form and come from nearly any source: lyrics to a song, a religious passage, a poem from class or our text, or a poem that you wrote or someone wrote to you. It can come from our textbook or not. When you find your piece of poetry, your task is to demonstrate and explain its poetic qualities through its use of poetic devices and its theme – its main idea, its insight into to the overall truth of the human experience. Please write at least a standard four to five paragraph essay (introduction, body, conclusion) using MLA page layout. Find and analyze the intense and poetic language in the poem [by describing and analyzing poetic devices, e.g., closed form (sonnet, epigram, eulogy, etc.), open form, lyricism (meter, rhythm), symbolism, alliteration, assonance, figurative language, metaphors, allusions, personification, onomatopoeia, synecdoche, etc.]. Explicate (quote and explain) specific lines, and cite them using MLA format conventions for line breaks (see our text, near page 1936 & 1950). Please avoid an abstract, general interpretation of the poem. Thus, you need to be specific in your explanation of what the poem means to you. Poetry has been described as an individual, personal experience, with everyone having his or her own connection to and interpretation of a poem. Please use your unique insight to explain how you know your work to be poetry and how its theme provides a valid insight into the human experience. You may use the first person “I” but not the second person “you.” Avoid slang; adopt a formal tone. Please include a copy of your poetry selection at the end of your paper. No Works Cited page is required unless you cite the text directly OR if you include external research.
