Article Link: http://goldmark.org/livia/papers/cultcult/cultcult.html Hong Kong is one of the most developed countries in the world and even though
it’s small, the location gives them several advantages. Since the Qing dynasty,
Hong Kong was a port city that mostly dealt with global trade. The British
returned Hong Kong back to China under the condition of one country, two
systems. Hong Kong would have their own government systems and own laws.
But recently, due to the plans to allow extradition of mainland China, there have
been violent protests going on. Hong Kong is an international trade center and
after the political instability, their stock market price fell. Even though China
agreed to allow Hong Kong to govern by itself, there are many rights groups that
have accused China of interfering with legal issues in Hong Kong. If Hong Kong
were to go back under mainland China’s rule, America’s tariffs would apply to
Hong Kong. The results would be definitely less global investors and would cause
economic damage. Although the Hong Kong Policy Acts requires America to see
Hong Kong as a separate territory from China, it is changing due to recent events.
• Learning about the current Hong Kong situation is very complicated. In a way, it
saddens me how the people of Hong Kong have been fighting for their independence
for so long from the British colony and now China. These people must be outraged
because they just want to choose how they are governed and be subject to the rule of
law. I think it was obvious that China would not apply the one country two systems
approach for eternity, so I am not surprised that China is now exploiting this. I think in
1997 when Hong Kong gained independence the U.S. should have offered a U.S.
passport to any Hong Kong citizen that wanted to be a citizen of the U.S. The Hong
Kong people that accepted would have gained democratic freedom and could fuel the
economy, add more intellectual knowledge, thus, globalizing the world. I thought it
was super interesting how the article quoted, “The rest of the world should stand up to
China’s bullying.” Our world is not globalized until we treat each other like neighbors
and respect their property. I hope to see the world globalized to a point where we offer
a helping hand.
