Observation Assignment | Online Homework Help
Observation Paper: This assignment will give you the opportunity to think about and apply what you have learned about child development (social, cognitive, physical, and emotional) through observation of children. Your observation paper should be 3 – 4 pages (not including APA format, cover page, and references), double spaced, 12pt, one-inch margins. Note that you will need to submit your location and field notes separately on dates noted in the syllabus prior to the final submission. This will earn points toward the assignment grade. You WILL NEED TO INCLUDE your original rough field notes when handing in your observation paper. (these are the actual handwritten raw notes that you took while conducting the observation). Field notes must be attached to the document (please make sure you are able to do this ahead of submission date, doing so will help prevent significant point loss) You should incorporate your assigned readings into this assignment. You must reference the readings with appropriate APA citation. A minimum of 3 additional resources are required. Assignment: Observe: children (3 or more) aged 2-6 in their natural environment (e.g. daycare, playground, library, Chuckie Cheese, park, classroom). if you do not follow this instructions, expect to lose significant points as missing this instruction will make render completion of the rest of the questions impossible to complete. If you are stuck, i have included Ben Samuels Children’s Center (located on MSU campus) folder in the files as a possible location. Please contact them and follow the protocol if you choose to observe there. Data: It is critical that you write down what you observe only and resist temptation to interpret or otherwise add your own opinion/assessment or input to what you are witnessing. WARNING: Failure to follow this instruction will lose significant points. If you are uncertain of the distinction, please post for general class discussion or contact me for clarification. Permission As necessary, obtain permission from the children’s parent or teacher (unless you are in a public area, such as a playground or a park). Be sure to tell the parent/teacher (if applicable) that the purpose of the observation is for a course assignment and that you will not be testing the children in any way. Explain that you merely want to observe children in a normal situation. Arrange a time when you can observe. Plan at least one hour of observation. During this time, do nothing but observe (and take notes). You must be free to be in the background. Note that one hour of observation would realistically produce a substantial volume of notes and therefore a minimum of two full pages of notes is expected. Relationship It is critical that you do not have a personal, current or prior relationship/association with respective adults or their child/children. Put yourself in as unobtrusive a place as possible. Do not invite or initiate any kind of contact with the children; do not make eye contact with the children; do not smile; and do not talk except when the children talk directly to you, in which case say you are busy and will play later. For one hour try to write down everything the children do. Write down speech (if you understand it), describe movements, and behaviors. Describe only what you see and hear, free of evaluation, intent or interpretation. For example, do not state “the child ran to his mother to be soothed”; instead write “the child ran to his mother, mother touched his hair, the child smiled, etc”. It is critical to observe only. Review When you have completed the observation, reread what you wrote and consider the following instructions in your analysis: Analysis guide and questions for Observation Paper (A response that demonstrates your understanding of the subject is required for each section, whether observed or not. in other words, DO NOT write that you did not observe it and provide no answer. Each instruction below correlates to a section of the rubric used for grading and requires a separate and complete response. Describe the setting for your observation. This must be adequate to gain a concept of what you are observing. Note the children’s ages, describe their physical appearance, and describe the setting in which you observed. Describe your ability to keep all description of intent out of your record? What were your challenges to remain objective? (comment on your experience and level of success with trying to do this) What do you think were the effects of your presence on the children? Provide examples. Which observations did you pay more attention to than others, such as listening to language, noting physical movements or focusing on one child, etc. Since you probably could not write down everything that the children did and said, think about what you left out, and add additional notes to your observation notes (You must show that you added notes to your originals and make sure they are discernible).
