When one thinks of food one may probably think of fuel, but Food is much more than
fuel. Food contains micronutrients, which are vitamins and minerals that contains
phytochemicals which are nutrients found in plants that can protect against cancer, decrease
heart disease, and protect against free radical damage. Zoochemicals are also found in food and
help reduce inflammation and blood clotting, inhibit complications from Diabetes, protect
against heart disease, and suppress cancer cell development. Food is also composed of
fiber, water ,and perhaps some organic molecules we haven’t discovered yet. Good nutrtion
controls energy balance, we know that to little energy coming into the body can shut down vital
processes and too much energy can create all sorts of problems such as, weight gain and high
blood pressure. As a nutritionist coach, I can guide my clients toward resources or help them
know what energy balance is right for them and their needs because there is such a thing as too
little and too much. Nutrition is an important factor since it involves taking care of one’s body.
“ There is no one best diet” and that’s why nutrition programs are customized and based off
the individual. This paper is a case study on Elvis Corban, which highlights the essential steps
towards developing and executing an appropicate nutrition program.

The best way to approach a new client is to assess important variables and choose your
approach based on your assessments. The client’s preliminary information includes demographic
information like the name, gender, social life and age, and personal medical history. Elvis is a 26
year old, working-class male who does not drink alcohol, and with a moderately active lifestyle
that includes hiking and skating. His medical history only includes mild allergic reactions to
drugs that contain sulfur and pollen, irregular constipation, hemorrhoids and heartburn and
neck strains and headaches that are mostly work-related and can be easily treated. He is at risk
of getting diabetes and arthritis in later years given that it runs in his maternal side of the family,
and physical exercise is important in the prevention of diabetes because the body is able to learn
how to utilize glucose fully and preventing arthritis through strengthening and nourishing the
joints (Cipryan et al. 263).
With an already lean frame weighing 160 pounds at 5 foot and 9 inches and 17.4% body
fat percentage, my client only needs to work towards achieving a body fat percentage of 10.9%
which is considered ideal for the age he’s in, and this means losing 10.3 pounds (Pasco et al. 5).
After analyzing the information in deeper detail, I would classify my client on the level of a
novice towards fitness given that he performs sporadic fitness exercises like pushups and hits the
gym once in a while.
Limiting Factors, Behavior Goals, And Outcome Goals
Sticking to a regular physical fitness program is hard for many people, especially when
the issues of work, family, and friends are factored in. My client scored a 46 in the readiness
change questionnaire indicating an intense desire to change and begin exercising, but the limiting
factors acting against this desire are numerous, and they include:

In the initial assessment, the aim is to evaluate the client’s first steps towards achieving
their fitness goals and how physically, mentally and socially prepared they are to achieve them.
1. Client level: Intermediate level 2
My client level is intermediate because of the following reasons:
•
He has experience in strength training and contact sport (football). He has the basic
knowledge of proper workout postures and currently performs both cardio workouts and
strength lifting.
•
He has been consistently working out and playing football for the last five years but
recently stopped playing football but continued with the sport-specific workout.
•
His cardio endurance is between 20 and 30 minutes.
•
He trains in the gym at least three times a week.
•
He does not have a significant history of injuries and does not have any reported medical
conditions for which he is receiving treatment or medication.
•
The client regularly goes for a medical checkup annually and the last check-up (2 months
ago) did not raise any issue with his general health.
2. Limiting factors
•
Nutrition- The client eats out a lot because he does not like cooking and hence has a
challenge balancing the right nutritional contents for his fitness.
•
Mindset- The client feels that physical exercise has been too demanding on his lifestyle
and is considering toning down his engagement with it. This is a limiting factor because
he might be drawn away from commitment and stop his physical exercise and nutrition
routine altogether.
Surname
•
4
Lifestyle- The client has reported that he has had several episodes of binge drinking on
the weekends which challenge his ability to resume his workouts on Mondays.
Additionally, he claims that he lacks the moral support from his family and friends as
most of his workout partners have moved away from the city and hence he lacks the
morale to keep working out.
•
Work- The client has started out in an employment position where he is traveling a lot
and often lacks time to work out. He also explains that his workplace has little
consideration for the ergonomic design of the furniture which might be strenuous on his
body. He also spends long hours behind his computer on his office desk hence he is
mostly dormant when at work.
3. Outcome goals
•
Weight- Reach a healthy weight. The client weighs 80 kgs at a height of 175 cm. His
Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) is at 26 which is slightly overweight. He aims to lose at
least five kilograms to reach his healthy weight for his height.
•
Caloric intake- The client’s current estimated calories intake per day is 3200. He wants to
reduce the intake to 2500 per day to suit his lifestyle and workout lapse in the recent days
of fitness.
•
Nutrition- Most of the food the client takes is rich in proteins and fats. He wants to
change that and add more vitamins and carbohydrates for workouts. This is aimed at
reducing body weight while maintaining the energy reserves for healthy workouts.
•
Physical activity- Increase the frequency and intensity of physical exercise. Client aims to
improve from the current three days a week to at least four days a week. He also aims to
Surname

increase workout intensity in aerobic training and gain in the weight he lifts during his
strength and conditioning workout.
•
Training- Focus more on agility and flexibility in training. The client wishes to increase
his agility in sport-specific training for football and also increase flexibility by stepping
up the intensity of stretches after each workout session.
•
Feeding habits- Eat more home-cooked foods for better management of diet. Client aims
to increase his consumption of home-cooked meals in order to better control the
nutritional contents of his diet as well as ration his food properly for the correct calories
intake.
•
Workout routine- Find another workout partner with similar fitness goals. Since the
client’s previous partners are no longer available, he hopes to find another partner for
morale in fitness workout sessions.
4. Behavior goals
•
Nutrition- Implement specified guidelines on diet based on outcome goals in nutrition as
will be developed with the instructor. Client’s dietary guidelines will be developed in
conjunction with the training instructor for them to adapt and change the nutritional
lifestyle.
•
Mindset- Improve attitude towards physical fitness by reading widely on the benefits and
gains that the client stands to gain from it. The client will also engage with other fitness
trainees who will boost his morale and change his mindset towards fitness and sports in
general.
•
Lifestyle- Closely monitor and significantly reduce alcohol consumption for the sake of
nutritional and fitness lifestyle. The client will maintain a record of alcohol consumption
Surname
6
and set realistic goals of the rates of reduction he will achieve within a specified time. It
is also advisable that the client maintains company that does not consume alcohol to
avoid peer influence.
•
Work- Redesign the tasks in his workplace to allow for many breaks in-between tasks for
stretching and walking in the office. Also, the client will consider bringing ergonomic
furniture to the workplace.
•
Workout- The client will weight train on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 5 am to 7 am.
Aerobic training and sport-specific exercise will be conducted on Mondays and
Thursdays from 7 pm to 9 pm. Monitor body weight closely to ensure a positive trend
towards the desired healthy body weight.
5. Assessments chosen
Based on the client’s preliminary information, I have decided to administer several assessments
including initial body composition, initial performance, current nutritional program, current
fitness program, and medical assessments
•
Initial body composition- I would like to know the client’s current body composition so
that the fitness training program can be designed based on that composition. This will
assist me in determining the optimal and maximum weight he should lift as well as the
aerobic exercises he should engage in to gain his outcome goals. Main interests in the
initial body composition will revolve around skinfold in the various parts of the body to
determine the body fat and the girth of the various body sites to determine the training
goals and optimal weight to be lifted. This assessment will be conducted prior to the
creation of a fitness guideline to ensure that the composition is incorporated in the plans.

Initial performance assessment- I would also like to perform an initial performance
assessment to determine the client’s level of fitness and hence design the program around
the current levels. The assessment will test the client’s maximal strength using bench
press, squat, and deadlift. A power test will be conducted using a barbell and vertical
jump. Endurance will be tested using the Vmax figures. This initial performance is
expected to show the client at an intermediate level of fitness and the fitness program will
be designed to maintain this level while achieving the specific goals earlier outlined.
•
Medical checkup- A full medical checkup is required for the sake of this fitness program.
I would advise the client to be checked for any cardiovascular diseases and symptoms
which may affect his aerobic and strength training for proper planning. Additionally, the
client should go for a neurological examination to assess the effects of the long history of
football on his neurological system. An assessment of any joint and bone issues would
also be included to ensure that the client lifting and training consider any weaknesses in
the bone structure. These assessments are crucial for the client’s safety when designing
and implementing the action plan for his workout. Depending on the medical
assessments, the intensity and frequency of workout as well as nutrition would be
adjusted to suit any particular incidences realized in the assessment.
•
Nutritional information- The client’s current nutritional information would be collected
to determine any improvements required. The assessment would also allow a better
understanding of the foods that are readily available for the client to incorporate them in
the nutritional and supplementation plan.
•
Current fitness program- Although the current performance levels would allow an
understanding of client’s workout, an assessment of his current workout plan and how
Surname

well it is working for him would also be conducted. This is to ensure that the new
program incorporates exercises that the client is comfortable with and also builds on the
current program instead of starting over a new, unfamiliar routine.
6. Recommended nutrition and supplement plan
In order to achieve a comprehensive evaluation, the International Sports Sciences Association
(ISSA) provides a tool that includes questionnaires and measurement tools. The assessments that
I will conduct include questionnaires on social support, physical activity readiness, the threeday dietary record, medical history, and present medical condition, comprehensive client
information, the readiness for change questionnaire, and kitchen makeover. The measurement
tools to be assessed are the: initial body composition, initial recovery assessment, initial
performance assessment, and the blood chemistry assessment.
The questionnaires represent the current status of the client in terms of health disposition
which includes any disorders that may limit his physical fitness routine and the current lifestyle
that he leads and how that fits into the plan. Through identifying whether there are any genetic
and medical disorders that may affect the program and the environment (friends, kitchen and
work) that the client is in, we can be able to customize the training program to fit their life. My
client will require to find groups that will keep him motivated during the program and reduce his
carb intake which is quite high given the three-day dietary record.
efforts.
What to Discuss With the Physician
The client is in good shape, health-wise, but I recommend a discussion on the issue of
supplements given that they may be side effects over continued use without consultation.

Referrals to a Professional Network
Given the client’s difficulty in adhering to the nutrition guidelines, I will provide him
with a nutritionist who is within my professional network and who has helped many other
clients.
Appointment Scheduling
The client wants to have attained his major goals by the end of six months, and as such,
my appointment schedule will be spread according to that objective. This coincides with the
ISSA guidelines on biweekly records as outlined in the client forms for specialists in fitness
nutrition, and this results in an evaluation period of six months or twelve weeks. From this, we
get a frequency of 6 intervals (every 2 weeks for 6 months), and I will outline activities at each
interval.
Interval one: This is after the first two weeks during which the client’s personal information is
collected through the various questionnaires highlighted above and analyzed deeply to create the
client profile. The client is then informed on their ability to participate in the exercise program
depending on the results of the analysis of the health and personal information they provided.
Interval two: At this stage, an assessment of adherence to coaching, nutrition and supplement
programs is done, and the client presented their biweekly report. It is a series of questions that
require detailed progress measurement in vital body measurements that were previously taken,
and a comparison with the original measurements reveal any changes and informs next steps.
Interval three: Progress is also measured here, and this includes collecting the client’s
measurements and health data to assess whether changes to nutrition plan and fitness program
are necessary. If everything is okay, we will head to interval four.
Surname

Interval four: A regular and intense workout program is already established at this stage, and an
evaluation of original objectives will be conducted. The biweekly report will be issued to aid in
this process, and stricter nutrition and exercise plan will be ensured.
Interval five: Further progress tests undertaken in order to ensure that the client is on track to
meet their 6-month objective which ends in two weeks.
Interval six: As the last interval, these biweekly report will be scrutinized more in order to
check whether objectives have been successfully met and provide the client with the results.
Plan of Action In Case Of Plateau
Hitting a plateau in fitness refers to the stage when it seems like one is losing progress
and everything remains the same which is because the body is already used to the initial changes
during training (Faires). If my client hits a plateau, I will consider changing the nutrition plan to
accommodate more types of foods and also change the workout plan through alternating between
various exercises. I will also reiterate the importance of good sleep and recovery periods and
introduce creative ways to achieve the same goals through applying other techniques of
exercising but on a less strict manner in order to avoid burnout and starvation.
Nutrition plan: Macro-counting
I recommend that Elvis’ nutrition plan be based on macro- counting, depending on his
level of activity and changes in his goals. Elvis requires 1758 calories to maintain his basic
metabolic rate. Hence, calculation of his macros will be based on the calories he needs for his
BMR. Elvis had indicated that one of his goals was to lose weight; hence he will need to go into
caloric deficit to lose body fat. Since Elvis explained that he needs a sustainable plan, I will use
15% to calculate his caloric deficit, depending on his level of activity. Since Elvis is going to be
Surname
11
engaging in exercise 3 days a week for at least 3 hours, his activity level will be moderate, hence
his total daily energy expenditure will be BMR *1.35 which gives 2373 calories. To lose weight,
Elvis will require a caloric deficit of about 20%, bringing his daily caloric requirements to 1898
calories per day. In addition to his macros, I recommend Elvis to continue taking his
multivitamin supplements and the whey protein supplements in his nutrition plan.

Plan of action if he plateaus
If Elvis reaches a plateau in his weight loss journey, we will first check the accuracy of
his macros before advising on changing his macros to see is any change is observed. In addition,
he will have the option of reducing the intake of his macros by about 50-100g per day. I will also
advise him to add a weight training session and a cardiovascular session to his workout program.
He could also increase the intensity of his exercises and shorten his resting periods.
Plan of action if he wants to compete in body building
If Elvis plans on competing in body building, I would recommend a carb cycle diet. This
diet will involve manipulation of carbs by reducing and increasing the intake depending on
activity level. On the days he plans on intensive workouts, I will recommend 4 grams of carbs
per pound of body weight. In his low int…
