“A refugee is a person forced to flee their country because of violence or persecution” (What is a Refugee? Definition and Meaning: USA for UNHCR). The refugee population I have chosen to talk about is the Hmong population. The Hmong people come from Southern China, Southeast Asia, and northern Laos (Xiong et al., 2016). The Hmong people were active in the fight against communism during the Vietnam War and fought along with the United States (Xiong et al., 2016). Because they chose to fight with the American soldiers, they have been prosecuted and tortured for years.
Some common beliefs for the Hmong population are that illnesses can be spiritual or physical in nature. Because of this, it is common to see the patient in the clinic or hospital for treatment however, they will request a shaman or religious leader to come to their bedside for a healing ceremony (Xiong et al., 2016). Another belief is that you should “never tell your bad dreams to people while eating or they will come true” (Xiong et al., 2016).
Two common health problems among this population are that they are “twice as likely to die from stomach cancer than Whites” (Xiong et al., 2016). Hmong women are 2.5 times more likely to die of cervical cancer than other populations as well (Xiong et al., 2016). Their health beliefs can affect these diseases because the patients may not accept Western medicine regimes and may choose to use a shaman or healer to deal with their diagnosis.

Peer Discussion 2 (La’Myra)
A refugee is a person who has been basically forced to leave their country in order to escape the bad that’s going on in their country. African immigrants in the United States are the least-studied immigrant group, despite the research and policy efforts to address health disparities within immigrant communities. Although their healthcare experiences and needs are unique, they are included in the “black” category, along with other phenotypically-similar groups. This process makes utilizing research data to make critical healthcare decisions specifically targeting African immigrants, difficult ( Public Health).
In African immigrant communities, diseases such as HIV and cancer are viewed as the result of spiritual issues. Therefore it is not uncommon for many African immigrants to consult oracles and traditional healers in their home countries, regarding those type of health problems.
