Number of Caterpillars on Tomato Plants Data and Histogram Worksheet Examine the following hypothetical data on the number of caterpillars on tomato plants that have been treated with four different treatments. Suppose you wanted to know the efficacy of several types of treatments that are used to kill caterpillar pests on tomato plants in your backyard garden. You had 24 plants. You sprayed six plants with a pesticide called ‘bug-b-gone.’ You also sprayed six other plants with a pesticide called ‘super zapper ultra-mega death lotion.’ For six other plants, you simply added a solution of dishwashing liquid and water. You sprayed the last six plants (the controls) with water to equalize handling effects. A week later, you counted the total number of caterpillars on your plants. The results are in the table below. Histogram Worksheet
Construct histograms for the data given in the
tables below. The data are hypothetical data
from beak sizes (beak depths) of two related
species of birds (Geospiza fuliginosa and G. fortis) on three hypothetical islands in the eastern
Pacific. These are two of the various species of
related finch-like birds that Darwin observed on
the Galapagos Islands during his voyage on the
H.M.S. Beagle. The observations he made
concerning these birds was crucial to his
formulation of his most famous hypothesis: the
process of evolution by natural selection; and
many scientists have examined these little birds
ever since. The heads of the birds are depicted in
Figure 5.13.
The basic shape and size of the heads of
Geospiza fuliginosa and Geospiza fortis.
The following data are hypothetical, yet they are based on real results. Read Lack (1947) for additional information on the subject. Determine what the proper number of size range
categories is needed by looking at the data. Plot three histograms with the following data.
A) Island: Los Gatos (only one species)
Species: G. fuliginosa
beak depths (mm): 8, 9, 9, 11, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 9, 10, 11, 9, 8,
10, 10, 10, 9, 10, 9, 8, 8, 9, 11, 11, 11, 9
B) Island: Dos Perros (only one species)
Species: G. fortis
beak depths (mm): 9, 9, 11, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 10, 11, 9,
12, 9, 10, 12, 11, 11, 9, 9, 9, 9, 12
C) Island: San Diego (both species coexist)
Species: G. fuliginosa
Species: G. fortis
beak depths (mm): 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 7, 7, 8, 9, 7, 8, 9, 9, 9, 8, 7, 7, 7, 9,
7, 9, 9, 9
beak depths (mm): 10, 10, 11, 13, 12, 13, 14, 11, 11, 10, 14, 13, 12,
11, 10, 12, 12, 13, 14
