Proposed Topic:
Education disparity among race and social classes in the United States.
Definition of the Problem:
Sociological institutions are in place to contribute to the structure, maintenance and even change
in our society. Since the American education system is one of these pillar institutions, an
educational disparity can cause conflict for our society as a whole. The current education system
is not equal for all individuals interacting with this institution and unfortunately this inequality
can cause an enduring effect. These vast educational inequalities can be viewed in a sociological
perspective by assessing the relationship between these key inequalities and an individual’s race,
social class or status, and gender.
Review of the Literature:
When reviewing the research in terms of race and social class, key reoccurring differences are
more than evident; graduation rate, available resources, and even disciplinary actions.
In regards to race and the graduation rate, information provided by the National Center for
Education Statistics shows that in 2011-2012, Asian and Pacific Islanders had a 93% graduation
rate, Caucasians had an 85% graduation rate, Hispanics had 76% graduation rate, and American
Indians, Alaska Natives, and African Americans had 68% graduation rate (The Condition, 2014).
When comparing the wealth of the school district, lower social class status can lead to limited or
even non-existent resources. According to The U.S. Department of Education, data from the
Civil Rights Data Collection suggests that in 2011-2012 “one in five high schools lack a school
counselor” (Expansive, 2014). In regards to disciplinary action taken, the same study also
indicates that young African American males are more likely to be suspended (Expansive, 2014).
The article “Racial, Ethnic and Gender Differences in School Discipline Among High School
Students” shows that “African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indian Youth are two to five
times more likely to be suspended or expelled” (Wallace, J.M. et al., 2008).
Thesis Statement
Equal educational opportunities are not available for those in certain racial and social classes
within the United States.
