Module 6 – Middle Eastern Diasporas: Case Studies

Find a film or novel or poem etc. that talks about the diaspora experiences of a Middle Eastern group in the West (Berbers in France, Iranians in US, Arabs in Belgium, Turks in Germany…)

Watch that movie / read that book etc.

Write a 300 word mini-essay about it. Please make sure to not just describe the content, but also try to analyze it. Which of the diaspora experiences that we discussed in class does it highlight? How? Does it focus on the problems of integration? The labeling and discrimination by others? Or does it show the comfort of familiar shops and restaurants that other diaspora members have opened and that serve as community meeting places? Does it also show the attempts to keep the connection to the home land alive, with letters, phone calls, remittances? So, try to analyze it in terms of our class discussion.
