MGT 166 University of California San Diego Shaffer Enterprises Presentation Create a video, about 5 minutes long (minimum 3 minutes; maximum 8).
Imagine you are hired as the Director of Compliance and Social Responsibility for Shaffer Enterprises. Your job is to develop and oversee ethics, compliance and CSR programs for the company.
Shaffer Enterprises is a new company, certified as a B-Corp, headquartered in Encinitas. Their main product is an electronic, hand-held device called a GottaGetIt, which provides educational experiences and social connections, aimed at children ages 8-12. The device is manufactured by a subcontractor in a factory in Tijuana, sold through the company website and social media advertising, and is also available in some retail stores. There will be a version tailored for each state in the US, aligned with that state’s educational curriculum. The initial product is GottaGetItCalifornia.
Prepare and deliver a presentation (could be just you talking or you could use visual aids such as powerpoint or a chart) that includes the company’s values and CSR goals, and how they will be implemented in the organization (including both the corporate offices in Encinitas and the factory in Tijuana). Be sure to include WHY these concepts are important.
You may choose whether you want to address (OPTION 1) the employees at both locations, or (OPTION 2) if you want to make this presentation to the Corporate Board of Directors and Shareholders.
The goals of your presentation are:
Demonstrate the value of your programs to Shaffer Enterprises and its stakeholders
Motivate the audience (employees or shareholders) to support and participate in the programs.
Please dress and act appropriately for the role you are playing, and deliver the presentation as if it were a real experience.
Grading Rubric:
2. Ability to translate concepts into actions – how should the organization actually act on the values and implement the CSR program. You might want to compare a scenario where the company has no compliance/CSR effort to the scenario you are advocating to show why it matters.
3. How well do you connect your message to the intended audience? Do you understand the perspective of the stakeholders you are addressing, i.e., employees or owners (depending on which option you pick)?
4. Inclusion of relevant examples from cases discussed in class (guest speakers, current events, case study presentations beyond your own team’s case) – can you identify best practices and use them as models for Shaffer Enterprises
5. Clarity of communication (not quality of video production)
As for requirement 4, I have included some case study presentations done by other groups Case Study: CVS

CVS’s Story at a Glance
●
Founded in 1963 by Stanley and Sidney Goldstein

chain. It became the largest acquisition in U.S. retail
pharmacy history.

How has CVS handled ethical challenges?
●
●
Violations of HIPAA:
○ CVS was not properly destroying sensitive patient information.
○ To respond to this, CVS settled a case with the Department of Health and Human Services and committed to a
corrective plan that revised the way workers dispensed of patient information.
○ We view this as a good response from CVS because they admitted their wrongdoing and changed their organization
to fix the problem.
Deceptive Business Practices:
○ CVS was responsible for pressuring doctors to prescribe medicine that was actually more expensive for patients.
○ In response, CVS did not admit fault, but settled for 38.5 million dollars in reimbursements for overcharging.
○ We view this response as expected, as they did not admit their wrongdoing, but indirectly did by reimbursing the
money that they received through their deceptive practices.
How has CVS handled ethical challenges?
●
Misuse of opioids:
○
○
○
○
○
Several instances of pharmacies ordering an excess of oxycodone tablets and distributing them to those who did not
need the drug.
CVS fought with the DEA in order to prevent legal action from being taken against them.
CVS was forced to settle an 8 million dollar lawsuit with the DEA for violating the Controlled Substances Act.
Initial response to this scandal was lackluster as they refused to admit fault until they were legally forced to.
Long term response was socially responsible as they implemented a educational program that taught people about
the dangers of opioids and how to use prescribed drugs safely.
Evaluate CVS’s decision to no longer sell tobacco products.
●
In 2014 CVS becomes the first National Retailer to stop the sell of tobacco
●
This decisions aligns with their mission to become a healthcare company.
●
2 billion dollars of revenue per year vs better reputation
●
Helped people stop smoking
What is the future of CVS in positioning themselves as a healthcare
company based on their decision to be socially responsible?
●
Using technology to execute new company goals: 1) to put patient health first and to 2) make medical
care accessible and affordable.
○
○
