ASSIGNMENT:

This project replicates what you will often be asked to do, both in your college career and afterwards: to discern what you want to say, who you want to say it to, and how best to say it. The RIP Project is intended to give you a deeper appreciation for what it means to make rhetorical choices and use genre conventions in order to convey a message as well as an opportunity to reflect on those choices.

Project Essay

Like each of the essays we have read in class, your essay must have a specific message. You will choose one of the options listed below, craft specific questions on your topic that you seek to answer, and perform outside research with respect to the rhetorical situation: subject, text, audience and context.

Option A – Personal Narrative

For this option, you will write a narrative essay, meaning that you are in some way a primary subject of the essay. Joan Didion’s “On Going Home” or Chang-Rae Lee’s “Coming Home Again” are examples of this form. You might choose to write a profile of a significant figure in your life. Or you may choose to write about larger social dynamics that have affected your life, like Didion. Or, you may choose to write about your family history or some other significant area of your life. However, keep in mind that this is not a diary. Your narrative essay must have a focused persuasive message. Contents: I want to write about my best friends, talking about our experience through
the middle school, the way we get along with each other and what happens to us when
we lives in different countries for a long time. I want to introduce my definition of
real best friend in my view and discuss the importance and influence of friendship to
me.
We know each other since the middle school and got closed. Then, we went to
different high school, but we still play together at the weekend. Now, we are college
students but, this time, we are not only in different school, but in different countries.
We have different environment, meet different people and experience different things.
We have little contact. Even so, we still help each other in need. Even so, when we
travel in Korea last summer, we still talked about everything as before.
Best friend
She walks toward me. She is same as usual: long hair with bangs, wearing a
sundress and sneakers. “why you always be late? It is so hot today!” she asks as if we
just meet a few days before, but actually we have not seen each other for six months.
“why you always reply my message slowly?” I ask. “I mute your message.” she says.
Her name is Grace. She is my best friend, not one of the. We have known each other
for nearly 10 years. No one can imagine we are the best friends. We scarcely contact
each other, only meet during the spring break and summer, mute each other’s
messages. However, I feel comfortable for this relationship, she either.
Same as previous summer, this time, we travel Korea. We sit in a bbq house,
enjoying meat and drink. This scene brings me back to the memories of middle school.
“how much money you have? two? I have ten yuan. We can order a omelet and add
cheese!” I said. The owner of the grocery know us, they see us and say “you again!”
we sat on the grocery down the street and watched the students passed over.“awwww!
The omelet is so good!” We always ate until 12:25 pm, and spend only 5 minus
rushing home (cause my mother require me go home before 12:30.) “Do you think the
owner of the grocery remember us? We went to the grocery everyday!” I ask. “I don’t
think so, we are not special, they won’t remember us.” Maybe she is right, we are just
passers for their life. Then, I ask her why mute my message. She told me that replying
others’ messages on time is a polite gestures, but is also a kind of stress. Even though
she has nothing to say or does not want to talk, she has to reply something or explain
why she replies so late, but I am the one she won’t feel guilty with no reply. She can
reply me whenever she is available or when she wants to talk. I totally understand her,
because I precisely clear that for both of us the most important precondition to be
friend is feeling comfortable. Feeling comfortable means that we do not have to keep
in touch all the time; we do not have to hide emotion; we do not have to keep no
secret to each other. I did not even know which university she went until I was a
sophomore. She did not go to her dream school and she did not want to share at the
beginning. When my mother asked about her school, she said “seriously? You do not
know which university your best friends at?” I always answered: “I do not have to
know if she does not want to share.” (what I want to say is we feel comfortable to
each other, respect and understand to each other, even though some behaviour can not
be defined as the behaviour of “best friend”)
We always have a happy relationship, and seldom have a serious conversation.
Once I break up with my boyfriend. I feel really sad. Grace is the first person I come
to mind. I pretend I am well and told her my story. Unexpectedly, she gave me a
serious response with her opinions, suggestions. She even consulted her friends.
( what I want to say here is that we know each other, she can know whether I am
joking(or I am really well) or I feel bad( even though I pretend I am fine.)
Conclusion: Best friends is even though we are in different countries and do not
contact often, we still know we are caring and thinking about each other. Best friends
is even though we have a long time no see, when we meet, We will feel nothing
changes.
