Marymount University John Adams & Edgard Varese Bibliography PPTs The Professor said:separate out the composer presentations and add information and fix the information,Please don’t forget that Varese was an advocate of Liberation of Sound and John Adams was a minimalist composer. Please focus on those styles for each composer. You didn’t have the correct musical style. also, you had added a lot about their biography verbally that you didn’t have written in your presentations. Please add those. ( The Composers Edgard Varese and John Adams )

(John Adams)
?
John Coolidge Adams was born on the 15th
day of February 1947. His birthplace was
Worcester, Massachusetts (AllMusic, 2019).
During his teenage years, he lived in the state
of Vermont for about half a decade.
?
When he was in the third grade, John Adams
started practicing with the clarinet. Initially,
his father, Carl Adams, was his tutor
(AllMusic, 2019). Another of his musical
influences was Felix Viscuglia, a bass
clarinetist with the Boston Symphony
Orchestra.
?
After completing university education, John
Adams began working at the San Francisco
Conservatory of Music as a tutor. He worked
in this institution for ten years, between 1972
and 1982 (AllMusic, 2019).
Music Period, Genres and Characteristics of
his Style (John Adams)
? John Adams lives in the expressionism period.
Expressionism was first applied in visual arts before it
migrated to other arts such as music.
? Expressionism originated in Germany in the early
1900s. In general, expressionists focused on
conveying emotion rather than reality.
? Expressionist painters utilized several techniques,
such as distorting reality, to create a terrifying effect
for paintings. Expressionist music is similar to
expressionist painting. Increased dissonance creates
a frightening atmosphere.
? On genre that Adams composed was opera. Some
of his opera compositions include Nixon in
China and The Death of Klinghoffer.
? One of John Adams’ most significant pieces was Nixon
in China. The genre of this song is Opera.
? The instrumentation includes wind instruments such as
violins and harps, woodwind instruments such as
clarinets, flutes, and saxophones, and brass instruments
like tuba and trumpets.
(John Adams)
? This piece contained elements of minimalism.
However, Nixon in China contains complex harmonic
structures.
? This piece is fascinating, particularly the second act,
which contains The Red Detachment of Women, a
Chinese revolutionary opera-ballet. Also, the audience
enjoys the woodwind harmonies as well as the sweetly
reflective string.
(Edgard Varese)
?
Edgard Varese was born on the 22nd day of December 1883.
His birthplace was Paris, France.
?
While in Turin, Edgar received his first real musical training from
Giovanni Bolzoni, a director at Turin’s conservatory (The Famous
People, 2019).
?
During his teenage years, he started engineering classes in the
Polytechnic of Turin. He was swayed by his father, who was an
engineer. Moreover, his father disapproved of Edgar’s interest
in music and math, and thus, he wanted Varese to dedicate
his life to engineering (The Famous People, 2019)
?
While in Germany, he met and married an actress called
Suzanne Bing. The two had a daughter named Claude.
However, their relationship did not last since they got divorced
in 1913.
Musical Period, Genres, and Characteristics of his Style (Edgard Varese)
? Edgard Varese lived in the impressionism period. This music
period occurred in the late 1800s and the early 1900s.
? During this period, the music composers were considered as
an impressionist. This is because they were being compared
with impressionist painters.
? Impressionism music’s main characteristics include timbre,
which is attained through harmonic usage and orchestration,
and impressionists using “color” in relation to music.
? One genre that Varese composed was orchestral music.
Some of his orchestral compositions
include Amériques, Arcana, Un grand sommeil noir,
and Tuning Up.
(Edgard Varese)
? One of Edgard Varese’s’ most exceptional pieces
was Amériques. The genre of this song is an orchestral
composition.
? The instrumentation of this piece include woodwinds such as
bassoons, flutes, oboes, and English horn. Brass instruments
included horns, bass tuba, and trumpets. String instruments
included harps and violas.
? This piece opens up quietly and later builds in dynamic
power. Amériques contains fiercely dissonant chords, and the
winds and percussion are rhythmically complex.
? This piece is also fascinating. For instance, the audience would
like the instrumentation set up. However, it is relatively short, just
over 23 minutes.
