describe how the artwork functions both literally in terms of its composition and
metaphorically in terms of its deeper contextual meaning, go to a museum or
gallery and pick one artwork – a drawing, a painting, sculpture, etc. from the 20th
Century and make your own , describing why you feel the work is culturally
significant, i.e. enriches our understanding of the world around us.
Focus on three elements, line, color and light and discuss as you are filming the
artwork, how these elements operate within the scope of the work and WHAT
MEANING do you derive from this? I encourage you all to go find your artwork
first and do some research on it.
In terms of grading, I will grade on Content (bio about the artist and background,
citing at least 4 separate sources — i.e. gallery description of work, artist’s personal
statement, any reviews of the piece, magazine articles and online citations.
ALSO: You MUST give direct quotes from these 4 sources in your video!!) and
Originality i.e. are your ideas new and engaging. Each will be worth approximately
25 points for a total of 50 points . I urge you all to watch the videos I’ve uploaded
(all called Wood European Lectures) to give you an idea of how to approach the
assignment. This just gives you a loose idea how to approach. must have at least 4
citations.

Many of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s paintings are in some
way autobiographical, and Untitled may be considered a
form of self-portraiture. The skull here exists somewhere
between life and death. The eyes are listless, the face is
sunken in, and the head looks lobotomized and subdued.
Yet there are wild colors and spirited marks that suggest
a surfeit of internal activity. Developing his own personal
iconography, in this early work Basquiat both alludes to
modernist appropriation of African masks and employs
the mask as a means of exploring identity. Basquiat
labored over this painting for months-evident in the
worked surface and imagery-while most of his pieces
were completed with bursts of energy over just a few
days. The intensity of the painting, which was presented
at his debut solo gallery exhibition in New York City, may
also represent Basquiat’s anxieties surrounding the pres-
sures of becoming a commercially successful artist.
