Alex M. Azar became the Secretary of Health and Human Service on 25th July 2018, after
spending a better part of his career working in both the private and the public sectors as an
attorney and in senior leadership roles, focusing on advancing research and innovation and
healthcare reform (HHS Leadership, 2019). Therefore, he has established three essential guiding
structures for HHS’s programs: protection of life and lives, facilitation of patient-centered
healthcare market, and the promotion of independence in the health care sector. Azar has
successfully led and established President Trump’s vision for healthcare, including an affordable,
personalized, patient-centric system that places the patient in control, treating the patient like a
human being, not like a number (HHS Leadership, 2019). He has established a patient-centered
approach to the value-based transformation of the US healthcare system, including outcomesbased payments, provider collaboration, transparency around quality of healthcare provision and
price, and unprecedented regulatory relief that puts patients over paperwork. He has played an
important role in transforming the pharmaceutical marketplace by lowering the drug price
through a comprehensive drug pricing program and the approval of a historic level of
biologically similar brand generic drugs. Therefore, he has shown excellent leadership by
working to make health insurance more affordable as well as creating of more options for
Americans who lack employer-based insurance.
His position gives him the responsibility of lowering the rising rate of deaths as a result
of any cause, be it due to diseases or other calamities that can be avoided. For instance, through a
comprehensive science and evidence-based approach, he has succeeded in lowering the death
from opioid overdoses (WTTV, 2020). Secretary Azar launched Trump’s historic effort to fight
the HIV epidemic in the US. Consequently, he has been able to track maternal mortality and the
health gap in rural healthcare, bringing new hope to individuals suffering from kidney illness and
addressing the important social determinants of health. His main role as the secretary of HHS is
to protect the general population from contracting infectious illnesses like measles, influenza,
Ebola and the most recent one, COVID-19 (HHS Leadership, 2019). He has done this by
ensuring that the federal government has prepared for human-made and naturally occurring
threats and disasters with the aim of leading the globe to protect their public health.
In the first few months under his administration, Azar decided exercised his power and
authority by surrounding himself with industry insiders whose resumes boast combined decades
of influence in the medical, pharmaceutical, and insurance providers (HHS Leadership, 2019).
He decided to exercise his power and authority by appointing Peter Urbanowicz as the chief of
staff. He also decided to appoint one more adviser so as to enhance the operations of the HHS.
Such appointments stand in some contrast to the leadership of HHS under the former Obama
administration appointees who inclined to favor political and academic types for top secretarial
roles and advisory. All these changes were aimed at making healthcare insurance affordable and
addressing issues like the opioid epidemic and heightened drug prices. Consequently, he decided
to appoint health insurance executive James Parker who he mandated the responsibility of
serving both as the head of the agency’s Office of Health Reform that oversees the
implementation of the Affordable Care Act and as a senior advisor.
Under his leadership, he has the lead in advocating to keep e-cigarettes out of the hands
of the children, which is very encouraging has it shows that he is empathetic about the future of
the younger generation. He has also worked to empower able-bodied individuals receiving
Medicaid through community engagement, and thus he has resorted to the focus of human
service programs aimed at promoting dignity, independence, and work (WTTV, 2020). Under his
leadership, he has championed struggles in improving access and care for those suffering from
severe mental diseases. Through he WHO regional groupings, Secretary Azar have shown that
diverse nations can unit in a positive way in coming up with a constructive goal that focuses on
the international discourse around healthcare on better health with the aim of preserving human
life. Through such groupings, he advocated for united voices to amplify these goals in the future.
Secretary Azar has been advocating for better health of men, women, and children to ensure a
healthy family for a healthy nation. He mainly focused on ensuring that the different nations
focus on topics that unite rather than divide on the crucial matters that surround the access to
health care (WTTV, 2020). Consequently, he advocates against ambiguous terms and
expressions like reproductive and sexual health rights as stated in the U.N documents saying that
their violation can weaken the crucial role of the family and led to practices like abortion in
situations that do not adhere to the international consensus and which can be misinterpreted by
the U.N agencies. He emphasizes that such terms do not effectively take into account the critical
role of family health and education as well as the sovereign right of nations in implementing
health policies as per their national context. Therefore, he argues that there is no right to conduct
an abortion and that these terms should not be used in promoting pro-abortion measures and
policies.
Secretary Azar keeps the common good as a leader by advocating for Sustainable
Development Goals in aiding countries to realize their own path to the establishment of universal
healthcare coverage in line with the national policies and legislations. He strongly supports equal
access to healthcare, including but not limited to the eradication of violence against girls and
women, reproductive matters, voluntary and informed family planning, maternal health, HIV,
and empowerment to reach the highest standards of health. During this time that the world is
faced with COVID-19 pandemic, Secretary Azar has ensured that the general public undergoes
treatment by first ramping up a nationwide testing program that allows the communities across
the nation to emerge from the COVID-19 shutdown. In an interview with Eyewitness News, he
said, “Very pleased with the testing levels we’ve seen in the United States. We’ve crossed over
16 million tests. We’re going to be doing over 13 million in the weeks, and in the coming weeks,
we’re going to be testing 350,000 to 400,000 people every day” (WTTV, 2020). This clearly
shows that he has a common good for the general population in the US. Consequently, he
mentioned that every staff member and patient in all the nursing homes must be tested to prevent
the spread of the disease among the elderly. Unlike other countries Italy that reached a point of
leaving the elderly to dies, Secretary Azar is keen on keeping them safe from the disease,
meaning that he has a common good in mind.
Indeed, good leaders like Azar act as icons in shaping the community and the nation at
large. People look up to leaders to guide them in their actions, and Azar is no exception when it
comes to managing the HHS effectively. They are therefore expected to lead, motivate, support,
and facilitate communication to their staff and the general public. Under his administration, he
has shown that the successes and failures are not weighed in dollars but in lives saved and lost.
He has demonstrated that the importance of leadership in the country should never be
underestimated, as individuals need rules and laws to govern their actions.
