Scholars have taken their position with leadership, agreeing there is the purpose for leadership, and that purpose is why leadership exists ( Northouse, 2019). One scripture  that stands out is Luke 22:27, “For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves?” Is it not the one who is at the table? However, I am among you as one who serves”. (Engstrom, 1979).

Evolution of Leadership

Throughout century leadership has had various definitions influenced by current events locally and globally (Northouse, 2019).  Each decade with a distinct focus and blending and expanding into leadership definitions today. During the 1900s, the focus was on oversight and the unification of power. It was an era of leadership compliance and dutiful with respect for leaders (Northouse, 2019).  Concentration during the1930’s leadership focus of defining leadership was no longer on dominance but preferably on influence along with personality traits of the leader merged with a group while group actions also influenced with leadership (Northouse, 2019).

The definition of leadership during 1940 was group, while leadership defined by the conduct of leaders during group activities (Northouse, 2019).   While the group continued to dominate in the 1950s, it also expanded with the influence and effectiveness of groups (Northouse, 2019).  During the 1960 leadership world, leadership maintained their influence and collaborated with philosophers (Northouse, 2019).   The group led leadership into the interest for an organizational behavior approach, while meeting organizational goals in the 1970s  (Northouse, 2019).

Influence extended into1980, where leaders understood it was their use of influence to make sure the task was accomplishing the task, not with persuasion, however with excellence, at the same time unity between leaders and followers (Northouse, 2019).    With the rise of different leadership development paths during the 1990s, it started with leadership using values, and leaders began to emerge with spiritual leadership (Northouse, 2019).    They saw themselves as caring for the followers, as they began to see themselves as servants to the follower (Northouse, 2019).    It was significant leaders focusing on followers ensuring the communication among the leaders and between the follower, recognizing their values and having behavior traits being called  into spiritual leadership to motivate leaders (Northouse, 2019).

Future of Leadership)

Leadership is gaining a more useful meaning, moving in the future with an incline of numerous organizations’ networks as they move towards becoming leadership agendas and not necessary people (Uster et al.,2019).  The future of leadership will become the organization in the network with the most resources, and power will lead the network future (Uster et al.,2019). Scholars also see the future of leadership authority weakening while there is an acceleration of resentment in the future (Kellerman, 2019). The future of leadership will see the increase in information technology, creating a decrease in the cost of communication (Northouse, 2019).

Followership

The evolution of leadership definitions included influence and process (Northouse, 2019).  Followership is too defined to include a process, and it is the process of followers accepting influence from leadership  (Northouse, 2019).  There are negative and both positive perceptions with followership, alone with having diverse meanings, depending on who is defining  (Northouse, 2019).  Responsibility and accountability are responses for their actions that followership carries, none the fewer leaders and followers are working together  (Northouse, 2019).  The communication among leaders and followers is defined by who they are and not what they do (Kellerman, 2019).

Evolution of Followership

During the 1930s, when leadership focused on the influence of followers, scholars began to have an active role in followers. However, decades later, research on the follower began with scholarly research work that began 1965-1995.    However, recent studies have been accomplished with followership by Chaleff, creating a Courageous Followership Model.

Future of Followership

Future of Followership continues to evolve as the attention is on followers, teaching good followership, the same as teaching good followership (Kellerman, 2019).  The significance of the follower’s role in the leadership process recognizes the leader needs to have followers while few people serve only as leaders or followers while occupying both. Chaleff (2015). Many followers, during the growth of social media, there are many followers.  Today organizations rarely have leaders who serve just as leaders or followers, they occupy both roles, and often they are served simultaneously (Chaleff, 2015).

Defining leadership with many definitions with an agreement, to it is a process. The process involves several ingredients influence and goal attainment as parts to the definition with a process. The ethical responsibility that comes during leadership, leaders, are responding to their followers.   Followership later recognized as a process; there are followers for leaders to lead. The future of followers is courageously taking part in the transformation to support the leader while focusing on improving their performance  (Chaleff, 2015).
