Law enforcement officers work everyday in high stress situations where much discretion is used. Officers need to make split second decisions based on their discretion when faced with different situations. The decisions they make could not only affect the people around them but, themselves as well. Police officers are trained to handle certain challenges that may arise due to the age groups of the offender and/or victim. For example how an officer would go about questioning a 25 year old verse a 70 year old is very different.
When dealing with older offenders/victims strong communication skills are required. These communication skills can be anything from the obvious verbal communication, to nonverbal communication; such as a reassuring touch to calm them, listening and as well as observing. Elders should be treated with respect, while sitting in close proximity and simple direct words should be used. A common misconception when officers encounter older offenders/victims is to assume they have an impairment. However that is not always the case.
The interviewing process of older adults often differs from the interviews of other age groups. Older adults most often need peace and quite in-order to focus and comprehend the words of the officer, therefore, taking them into a quite room will help to minimize distractions. When interviewing older adults officers must remember to speak slowly, be sensitive in allowing them to answer at their own pace and not to interrupt them. Due to aging impairments may arise, this is something officers must take into consideration when interviewing older adults. Issues such as mobility is as well as cognitive limitation must be taken into consideration. Cognitive limitations are taught to be dealt with by listening patiently, not discounting the alleged abuse and using memory cues to help spark ones memory.
In-order for the criminal justice system to keep up with the growing population of older adults officers should have more training within the field of encountering older offenders/victims. By extending their knowledge of the biological, social and psychological aspects of aging it will assist them in giving them a better understanding of the aging process and what it does to the body and mind. More programs such as the Triads and SALT should be created to assist in keeping officers informed.
The writer needs to read Meaghan’s post and reply directly to her by greeting her: Hello or Hi Meaghan and start replying. The writer needs to tell Meaghan where he/she agrees or disagrees with her and why he/she is agrees or disagrees. The writer need to ask Meaghan questions if any and needs to provide feedback and or opinions.
Again, again, and again: Please assign this order to the same writer who is writing the main discussion post order #360462185 just to prevent any misunderstanding because this is the same topic to discuss which the writer already has an idea or knowledge about the topic; the different is that the writer has to read carefully Meaghan post and responds to her about what she writes in her post.
Thank you.
