Irvine Valley College This Boys Life Journal Entry Create a journal or folder on this project where you will complete 6 requires tasks. READING JOURNAL PROJECT.docx
Assignment Overview: Choose one of the titles
listed on the handout to read at your own pace
throughout the semester. You will create a journal or
folder on this project where you will compile 6
required tasks. If you wish to read a book not listed,
you must get approval first. NOTE: No fiction titles
or poetry will be allowed (for this particular project).
This will be due at the end of the semester.
BOOK LIST.docx
Objectives: This assignment allows you the
opportunity to “read for pleasure”—something
students rarely get to do. Correlations have been
proven between reading and improved writing; this is
largely due to the fact that as one reads, he or she
internalizes writing style and often begins to
unconsciously (or consciously!) imitate this in his or
her own work.
Tasks Required: In a journal or folder, you will
complete the following:
1. Before reading, research the author. Print
out/include at least one page of the author’s
background.
2. As you read, make a log of websites and/or
print articles and/or define concepts that come
up during the book that interest you. They can
directly or indirectly relate to the story itself
(for example, if you’re reading the story about
thaiaurnalist who alimabad
Maunt Tuaraat
people/situations in this book (if applicable)?
Explain.
4. When you’ve finished the book, write a 3/4-
one-page journal response on the following:
What did you personally feel was the meaning
to be gained from this book? In what ways did
it add value or meaning for you, personally?
What was your favorite part of/moment in the
book? What quotes (if any) “spoke to you”?
What elements will you remember and why?
5. Create a page that represents artistically one
or more aspects of your book. If you like to
draw, you might illustrate a person or scene
from the book that you found meaningful. You
could create a collage of images from photos
or advertisements that represent themes in the
book. You could even write a poem or music
lyrics—or use any other artistic medium (such
as a single artistic photograph) to convey the
mood/tone of the book—or to symbolize
something in the book.
6. When you finish the project, write a journal
response to the following: Did you enjoy the
literature project? Why or why not? Can you
think of any books that I should add to the list?
Do you have any suggestions for how I might
improve it?
directly or indirectly relate to the story itself
(for example, if you’re reading the story about
the journalist who climbed Mount Everest, you
might write down “hypothermia” and “Sherpa”
and web-surf to find out more about them).
The goal is to research and learn about new
things referred to in your book. There is no
“right” or “wrong” way to do Task 2. Just show
me what topics interested you enough to
research them.
3. Write a 1/2-page journal response when you
are about half of the way through in which
you merely respond to the book and project so
far. Are you enjoying your book? Why or why
not? Is it what you expected? What has
surprised or interested you most about your
book, so far? Do you relate to any of the
people/situations in this book (if applicable)?
Explain.
