Instructions and Readability Formulas.

It’s important to write instructions that are clear and simple enough that most readers will be able to understand them. Data suggests that American readers typically read somewhere between a 4th and an 8th Grade level, with around 20% of Americans reading at even lower levels than this (Agee, 1996).

Readability formulas have been devised by reading and writing experts as a way to check a text’s reading level. One famous Readability Formula is called SMOG, or “Simple Measure of Gobbledygook.” This formula counts the number of multi-syllabic words, which tend to be hard to readers to understand, and divides them by the number of sentences studied in order to mathematically determine a text’s Reading Level.

Research SMOG or another readability formula in the APUS Trefry Library and then apply it to the instructions you’ve written for Assignment 4. (PRODUCT INSTRUCTIONS I’ve written for Assignment 4 is the Attached file)

Answer the following questions for your initial forum post:

What’s the name of the Readability Formula? Where did you find information about it?
How does the formula work?
What did you learn about your instructions after applying the formula to them?
Are your instructions written at an appropriate level for most readers? Why or why not?
Based on this exercise, what needs to be changed in your instructions?
