ASSIGNMENT

The assigned listenings for this week (Week 11) showcase Indigenous musicians from around the globe. For this prep assignment, choose ONE of the following:

  1. Make detailed listening guides for twoof the assigned listenings. Elements to consider: structure and form, rhythm and meter, instrumentation, vocal and instrumental timbre, performance style, use of melody and harmony. If appropriate, discuss how the work combines traditional and contemporary elements. Approx. 3/4 page per listening guide.
  2. Land-based identity is a core value for Indigenous communities in many parts of the world. Choose twoof the assigned listenings. How do the artists use music to speak about the importance of the land to themselves and their communities? In what ways is their music a response to the land and the animals that inhabit the land? 300-350 words total.
  3. Music can be used as part of an initiation process or a rite of passage. Choose twoof the assigned listenings. How do these songs invite listeners into a space of personal or community transformation? If you’d like, you may conclude by discussing a piece of music that accompanied you during a time of personal transformation. 300-350 words total.
  4. Select two related listenings. Compare and contrast them musically, using the Careful Listening Framework. Then choose one of the listenings and either: 1) write or re-write lyrics, 2) compose several new verses from scratch, or 3) write a new instrumental section. Explain your creative process. 300-350 words total.
