Meet Your Classmates

Post a short introduction on the discussion board to your professor and classmates

and include personal information, hobbies, professional information and rationale for selecting a chosen master’s in nursing (MSN) track.

Discussion Board Posting (3 points): The focus this week is to practice, practice, practice writing a PICOT question, so it becomes second nature. By honing skills in writing a PICOT question, the clinical/administrative issue will be well defined and the search for evidence will be more successful. Each component of the PICOT question must be clearly articulated. No duplicate PICOT questions. Instructor will approve the PICOT question.

·         Formulate a patient-centered-PICOT question using theinterventionformat found inBox 2.2 on page 44 of the text

ü  Each of the three replies to classmates should be a critique of the structureof the PICOT question. Is it in the correct PICOT format? Is the question specific enough? Is the patient population specific? Is the intervention a nursing intervention? Are there too many outcomes? Does the question make sense? Provide colleagues with suggestion on how to improve the PICOT question. No medical interventions!

·         Discuss one (1) strategy a master’s prepared nurse could do to cultivate a spirit of inquiry to overcome barriers from colleagues who are resistant in pursing the PICOT intervention

Discussion Board Instructions and Rubric for MSN Online and Hybrid Courses

The purpose of the Weekly Discussions is to develop a scholarly and dynamic exchange between students, faculty, and other students in the course promoting an active and engaging online learning community. Your success, and the success of your classmates in a positive learning environment, are dependent on discussion participation and timely completion of assignments.

Use these guidelines and rubric for all discussion board postings. Each week begins on Monday at 12:01 AM/EST and ends on Sunday at 11:59 PM/EST. ***Initial postings cannot begin until Monday 12:01 AM/EST of each week. Assignment 1: Getting Started with a PICOT Question (20 points)

Course Instructions:

All assignments in this course build upon each other. Assignment 1 builds on the PICOT question submitted by the student and approved by the instructor in Week 1 of the discussion board. The PICOT format for this course is an intervention question. The interventions must be nursing interventions and not medical. No duplicate PICOT questions.

Step one (1) of the evidence-base practice (EBP) process is to formulate a burning PICOT question. Step two searches for the best evidence by considering the elements of the PICOT question.

Students will develop a scholarly paper utilizing the American Psychological Association (APA) 6th edition format and include the following criteria.

Assignment Criteria:

  1. Describe the clinical or administrative problem related to the PICOT question formulated and approved in Week 1.
  • Formulate the PICOT question in the intervention format
  • Discuss why the problem is important to nursing practice
  • Discuss the chosen intervention
  • Elaborate on how the intervention impacts the stated outcome
  1. Discuss two (2) barriers that a master’s prepared nurse might encounter before implementing the intervention.
  2. Explore two (2) possible actions that can be used for handling those barriers.
  3. Identify two (2) explicit inclusion criteria and two (2) inclusion criteria to be used in the analysis of the evidence
  4. Identify the databases (e.g., CINAHL, Medline) and key terms used in initiating the search.
  5. The scholarly paper should be in narrative format, four (4) to five (5) pages excluding the title and reference pages.
  6. Include an introductory paragraph, purpose statement, and a conclusion.
  7. Include level 1 and 2 headings to organize the paper.
  8. Write the paper in third person, not first person (meaning do not use ‘we’ or ‘I’) and in a scholarly manner. To clarify: I, we, you, me, our may not be used. In addition, describing yourself as the researcher or the author should not be used.
  9. Include a minimum of three (3) references from professional peer-reviewed nursing journals to support the paper. References should be from scholarly peer-reviewed journals (review in Ulrich Periodical Directory) and be less than five (5) years old.
  10. APA format is required (attention to spelling/grammar, a title page, a reference page, and in-text citations).
  11. Submit the assignment to Turnitin prior to the final submission. Please be sure to review the originality report and make any needed changes.

Assignment 2: Evaluate the Evidence (18 points)

Course Instructions:

Using a two-step process, students will evaluate and synthesize the external evidence results from two (2) of the strongest external studies retrieved during the search of the literature that supports the intervention of the PICOT question formulated in Week 1. These are the studies that answer the chosen PICOT question and directly relate to the chosen intervention. The studies must be within the discipline of nursing and not medicine.

Assignment Criteria:

  3. Include a legend on the evaluation table.
  4. Place the completed Evaluation Table as an appendix.
