Hello class,
I hope you are all doing well. It was nice to see and chat with many of you during the Virtual class today.
Looking forward to seeing you again on Tuesday from 1-2pm.
Tomorrow is the due date for the second essay proposal. Some of you have raised questions about the
assignment and what you are supposed to write about. So I thought I’d share an email I sent to one of you
with the rest of the class.
Part of the assignment for this essay is for you to come up with a topic of your own. I will help, but the first
stage is to do some brainstorming of your own. The only requirement is that it must raise a question or
address a problem that emerges from your reading of Greek mythology. So you must focus on Hesiod’s
poems, Homer’s Odyssey, and/or Miller’s Circe. The Homer and Hesiod handouts that I gave you before
the break are all available in the Content menu on D2L in the Readings module.
As for the topic, as I said in an earlier email, you can choose a question from an earlier homework
assignment or discussion forum, or from the midterm exam. If any of those questions or problems look
interesting, you can reframe them for yourself and develop your examination of that problem into a 5 page
essay. Alternatively, and I encourage this, you can construct a question or problem of your own that relates
to Miller and/or the ancient Greek the texts we read together. Treat the essay as a chance to work through
and resolve a problem or examine an idea (e.g. about gender roles, fate, honor, etc.) that you find
fascinating, and show how your interpretation of Greek mythology helps you think about.
If the brainstorming process does not yield fruit this week, let me know and I will help you focus next week.
Sound like a plan?
Best,
George

14. How does Circe experience and describe motherhood? What is she afraid of? To what
extent does the goddess Athena embody all of her fears?
Miller explained that the circle experience becomes one of the supportive persons he
encounters on his journey. Her part of benevolent, healing along with wise, was gone, and the
miller was willing to bring it. Miller describes motherhood as the secret realism that mothers
faced along with motherhood social institutions restricting mothers to their duties of nurturing.
She was afraid that motherhood is not that essay as the circle was pregnant having Odysseus’s
son. The goddess Athena embodies all of her fears since the Telegonus was raised with a lot of
love and was protected from Athena (Jurriën, 2018). Athena is the goddess of war arts, justice,
wisdom, courage, strength, craft, inspirational and strategic warfare in the mythology and
religion of ancient Greek. The goddess was portrayed as a heroes’ companion shrewd
companion. Athena wanted the Telegonus dead, but he was well protected by his mother. The
goddess Athena embodies all of her fears since there was no chance to kill Telgonus as he was
being protected by his mother.
