HUM 122 Johnson County Community College The Museum Chiura Obata Review Paper Here is where you will find the dropbox you will use to submit your museum review, whether you did an in-person visit, or made use of the online option for it. Your paper will be processed through the Turnitin program to check for plagiarism. You will be able to view the scoring of your paper after the points grade has been assigned. Late and re-submissions may be allowed in certain cases. It is important to check with me before attempting to submit a review after the due date has passed. It will be open from Sunday, June 28th, at 12:00am, until Sunday, July 19th, at 11:59pm. As you get your papers ready for submission via the dropboxes, please do not use Microsoft Works or the Apple program “Pages” when preparing them. It has coding that is sometimes incompatible with the dropboxes. Please submit them using either Word or the PDF format. Most word processing programs allow you to prepare a paper and then do a “Save As” to save it into the PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. This rubric will be used to assess your review. Museum Exhibition Review
Online Option
[These are the guidelines for those who will be utilizing the on-line option for researching their
review]
Because it can be difficult for some online students to attend area museum exhibitions due to their
work schedules, family obligations, or even their distance from suitable venues, there is an online
option for students in this class. You can take advantage of this option if it will help you more

option for students in this class. You can take advantage of this option if it will help you more
easily complete your written review paper. I do want to be clear that I believe very strongly that
nothing replaces the actual experience of seeing an art work up close and in person, and usually if
you live in the Kansas City area there are many good choices available to you especially the
Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art which is right here on
the JCCC campus. But sometimes even those choices just aren’t feasible for one reason or
another as we are seeing right now.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s online offerings include a number of different
exhibitions of painting, photography, sculpture, works in clay and works on paper, and even
some online exhibitions of the decorative arts. Any of the exhibitions on the
https://americanart.si.edu/art
(https://americanart.si.edu/art) website are acceptable for this
assignment. Other than the source for your review, the requirements are the same regardless of
the option you choose. I would expect that your review would include no fewer than 3
works, but no more than 6 total in your paper. The depth of thought given to the analysis
is more important than the number of works in the review.
Please keep these guidelines in mind: The review is worth two hundred (200) points and
must be a minimum of 900 words (three [3] typed pages of text, double-spaced with one
inch margins, and 12 point Arial font. Type your name, class, and date in the upper left-hand
corner of your paper, singled spaced. Then double-space and center your title (e.g., A Review of
Bingham to Benton: The Midwest as Muse). Double space after your title and begin the text of
your paper. A cover page is not necessary.
The due date for the review is listed on the Calendar and in the assignment instructions. Make a
backup copy of your review in case your hard drive crashes or your flash drive becomes infected
with a virus.
Please observe the correct grammatical and technical forms of paper writing in completing this
assignment. Do not create a cover page. Simply type your name, class, and date in the upper
left-hand corner. Make a backup copy of your paper in case your hard drive crashes or becomes
infected with a virus.
For guidelines on writing your review click the Guidelines document in the Writing Assignments
module. Papers that fail to meet the assignment guidelines will be penalized per the rubric
criteria.
Submit your review using the Assignments Drop-Box. Do not send the review as an email
attachment. Click the Museum Review Drop-Box link in the Writing Assignments module to

NOTE 1: Before writing your review prepare for it. (Re)read the unit lesson and/or the chapter in
the text that discusses the genre you will review. Make up a typed “review sheet” (see below) with
specific ideas or issues that pertain to the artistic form selected for review (be sure to leave room
for your written comments). Some, but not all, of these issues are listed above. Use your review

for your written comments). Some, but not all, of these issues are listed above. Use your review
sheet as you are viewing the website so that you can make notes for when you write your paper..
Don’t rely solely on your memory when you actually do the writing of the review.
NOTE 2: Visit the Writing Center
(http://www.jccc.edu/student-resources/tutors-
accessibility/writing-center/index.html#.VV1QxEYuHHo) , LIB 308 if you require more assistance. The
Writing Center also has an Online Writing Lab
(http://www.jccc.edu/student-resources/tutors-
accessibility/writing-center/online-writing-lab.html#.VV1QkkYuHHo) for distance learning students who
need assistance, and then there is this site run by Purdue University
(https://owl.english.purdue.edu/) that I have often found to be very helpful.
NOTE 3: If you are currently enrolled in English Composition you may be able to use this writing
assignment to fulfill your composition requirements. Be sure to consult with your composition
professor and provide him/her with this information so that the requirements of both writing
assignments are fulfilled.
Writing About a Museum Special Exhibition
When writing the review the student should include (but not be limited to) the following items:
1. Genre Exhibited: painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics or textiles. Period or style?
2. Artist(s): very short bio [where studied, where artist teaches, previous exhibits, etc.] but
remember that the focus of the review should be on the works and not who created them.
3. Curatorial Elements: objects selected–Why? How are they presented or arranged? Lighting?
Printed exhibition guide provided? Explanatory posters provided?
4. Discussion of Selected Works: What do they reveal individually? What do they reveal
collectively about the artist(s)? about the medium? about the style? About ourselves and
our world? [Very important information to include.]
Your analysis of the exhibition as a whole, and individual works of art, should conform to the
standards of artistic criticism: Descriptive, Interpretive, and Evaluative Criticism.
