Final Draft Grading Rubric
Requirements:
● MUST be in MLA Format (resources below)
● MUST be 5-7 pages double spaced (The Work Cited does not count as the 5th page)
● MUST have a Thesis Statement in the introduction paragraph (resources below)
● MUST have a Work Cited Page with 3 or more reliable sources (resources below)
● MUST have In-Text Citations for each of your reliable sources, aka Parenthetical
Citations (resources below)
● MUST be written in formal/academic language. Should NOT contain yourself or any
personal pronouns in your Research Paper. No “I”, “me”, “my,” etc.
● MUST Spell Check your paper. Please and thank you! (try Grammarly! It’s Free!)
● Research Paper Topic: from the Capstone Research Paper Proposal you submitted
previously, needs to have a connection to either or both your Post-Graduate Plans
(plans after you graduate high school) or your Volunteer Experience (the 40 hours of
community service you need to complete).
You will get an AUTOMATIC ZERO if your paper does not have:
● MINIMUM of 5 pages
● MLA FORMAT
● In-Text Citations
● Work Cited Page
You will be able to resubmit your paper once it has these 4 requirements but we will not
grade or give feedback until your paper meets the minimum required.
Why? Because your paper contains outside sources and without these components it is
Plagiarism. So we are protecting your best interest.
Good Rule of Thumb:
● You should have one citation per body paragraph of where your research is coming from
● Every source in your Work Cited should be represented in your paper, and vice versa,
every source in your paper should be in your Work Cited
● If you run your paper through CheckMyWork or a Plagiarism Checker having your paper
under 20% similarity is acceptable (though up to teacher discretion)
● If you create an outline (example outline below) and THEN write your Thesis Statement
it usually allows for a better-organized paper
DISCLAIMER: Unlike other Portfolios in our class you will NOT be able to submit a blank
portfolio for the Unit 1 Lesson 6 Rough Draft. It MUST be a full 5 page Rough Draft. We will
reset any portfolios that do not meet these requirements or give it a zero until the requirements
are met.

Thesis Statement
● A Thesis Statement is generally ONE sentence at the end of your Introduction
Paragraph
● Your Thesis should include 3-4 points that will give a guideline/road map/outline to your
paper (it helps your reader get a preview of what your paper will be on, and in what
order)

If we do not get your portfolio back to you with comments, edits, etc. before you are
ready to turn in the final draft you may always turn in the Rough Draft again to the Final
Draft and move on in our English class. We will reset the dropbox once we have edited your
Rough Draft and will send you a webmail letting you know we reset the dropbox and that you
will now be able to submit your Final Draft for grading.
