tested this week. How did you react? What did you learn?
Boundaries are important in counseling because boundaries allow the professional to keep the work at a
professional level and not get involved on a personal level. As a therapist, if I get too involved and overstep my
boundaries, I am not doing the client any justice. The client may take the situation inappropriately and lose the
trust of the professional. This could cause the client to mistrust professionals and therefore may not seek
treatment.
My boundaries were tested this week with one of my clients whose child has been placed in foster care. My client
asked me to attend a Family Group Conference as a professional support. I am a previous child protective services
caseworker so therefore I had some knowledge of the situation. During the Family Group Conference, it was
discovered that the caseworker had not completed some task that should have been completed and may be
prolonging the child to remain in foster care. I was at liberty to ask some questions however, I had to keep it on a
professional level and not get too involved. I learned that it was not my place to step in on that matter, but I
could ask appropriate questions. I learned that it was emotionally harder for me than I thought it would be.

Boundaries are important to maintain a healthy therapeutic relationship. Understanding each others expectations
and boundaries is foundational. However, there are some exceptions to boundaries; to decide if you are in a
situation that may involve boundary crossing it is important to decipher if it will be helpful or hurtful (Pope, KeithSpiegel, 2008). I work in a childrens inpatient psychiatric unit and today was a day that tested my patience and
boundaries. One situation included a young patient who approached me from behind and gave me a big hug.
Usually if kids ask for a hug, I say, I am more of a high five person and reach out my hand for a high five.
However, because I did not see it coming, I did not have the opportunity to redirect. I calmly asked the patient not
to hug me without my consent, (explaining what this meant in the process) and shared what I would have
preferred her do instead. This allowed us to communicate appropriate boundaries as well as use it as a teaching
moment for the patient.

Good evening Madison,
Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
Class,
Boundaries are incredibly important to have when being a counselor. Clients try to learn anything and everything
they can about you, and in some cases might try to use that information against you. You never want to give a
client personal information about you, or have a conversation with a client in which they can speculate
information about you. Aside from trying to learn personal information about you, clients will continuously try to
test your boundaries to see what they can get away with. This is especially common within the substance abuse
field. Clients also try to triangulate meaning, if they do not like what one counselor says they will go try to ask
another counselor. Much like how a child would do to their parents.
This pas week my boundaries were definitely tested. I was conducting group counseling and an adolescent client
was asking if they could have a two minute break to order Uber Eats approximately 15 min from the session
ending. I told the client no and that they could wait, in which they of course tried to sell me on why they needed
to order Uber Eats right at that moment. After I once again said no and carried on explaining the activity the client
accused me of being mean to them. I just ignored the comment and carried on with thee directions. Due to the
client being upset that I did not acknowledge them they did not take the activity seriously in which I assigned
them to have it redone and presented to me the next morning and if failure to do so they would be placed on a
behavioral contract.

Good evening Julie,
Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
Boundaries are important because of so many different things. Some of the main ones being we dont want to
offend, we dont want to make anyone feel invaded and we dont want to lose trust. Boundaries have been talked
about and they have been tested. I have experienced those that do not want to open up right away for fear of
information that they share leaving the meeting and being shared. I have reacted by staying respectful, always
being honest and just continuing to try and build that rapport even though it is still early, and it has started to
work. I am starting to build some really good footing with some of the clients.
