Greeting Ashley! First off I like how you presented the dates over the years with valuable points. one thing that I really enjoyed reading from your presentation was the French phase since I personally find it crazy that 8 million people were killed in the process. Overall it was simple to read and understand. It’s kind of like my presentation in a sense since we both followed a timeline. Things in your presentation that can use a little more of, are images. History of Religious Warfare in Europe
• The period between the years 1524 to 1648 was characterized by
wars based on religious differences.
• Peasants’ War took place in year 1525 in the Holy Roman Empire.
• Additionally, the War referred to as Schmalkaldic, which occurred
between years 1540 to 1555 had two participants, the Holy Roman
Empire and the Turks.
• Between the years, 1618-1648, a great religious war occurred among
the main religious antagonists, Catholics and the Protestants.
The French Civil War
vThe French Civil War was characterized by two antagonizing sides.
§ Guise family were in support of Catholics in the Northern part of Europe.
§ Bourbon family were in support of Huguenots in the Southern part of
Europe.
vCatherine de Medici, the wife to Henri II, was in support of the Guises at
the beginning stage of the War.
vThe Civil War came to an end when Edict of Nantes declared that
Catholicism is the official religion in France.
vAdditionally, Edict of Nantes also provided Protestants with a significant
degree of religious freedom.

vAfter some duration, Catherine de Medici started supporting
Bourbon family which led Huguenots.
vAlso, during the French War, Henri of Navarre was able to defeat the
Catholics and became Henry IV of France.
vHenry IV of France became a Catholic with the aim of restoring peace
in France.

• The French Monarchy was greatly weakened.
• France was greatly divided by religion and as a result Catholicism
became dominated the nation.
• Protestants were persecuted following their refusal to join
Catholicism.
The Thirty Years War (1618-1648)
• The major battleground for the War that lasted for thirty years was
the Holy Roman Empire.
• The war was mainly between two antagonists namely; Catholics and
the other religions.
• The War that lasted for Thirty years occurred in four main stages.
The Bohemian Phase (1618-1622)
• The main ruler at this time was Ferdinand II.
• Ferdinand was against the Protestants at all costs.
• During his reign, rebellion increased tremendously following his
refusal to tolerate Protestants.
The Danish Phase (1625-1629)
• Ferdinand II worked toward ending the rebellion and in the process
he tried to crash Protestant northern Holy Roman Empire.
• Also, during this phase, Edict of Restitution helped in restoring the
lands Catholics had lost.
• Edict of Restitution led to deprivation of religious and politics rights of
all the other religions except Protestants.
The Swedish Phase (1630-1635)
• In this stage, two nations, France and Sweden actively participated in
the War with an aim of stopping Habsburg power.
• France provided the necessary support to Sweden which was in
charge.
• Gustavus Adolphus attacked the Holy Roman Empire.
The French Phase (1635-1648)
• In this phase all the countries in Europe participated in the War.
• The French phase was very destructive.
• Majority of German towns were destroyed.
• Approximately 8 million people died during the war.
The Peace of Westphalia (1648)
ØThe Peace of Westphalia led to a number of religious resolutions.
Religious Resolutions
ØCalvinists were granted the same privileges as Lutherans in the Peace
of Augsburg.
ØThe rulers of each state were charged with the responsibility of
determining the official religion in their states.
ØIn the case where the lands were hereditary, freedom of private
worship was granted.
