Source Review Paper Assignment
Find six scholarly sources to support the research topic you selected for the final project. Please make

you have at least one book and two scholarly journal articles. For this assignment you will be
reviewing the six sources using the four general guidelines below in your review and analysis of each
source. In typing up the review please do not simply go through each of the questions listed below and

I. Suitability
• Does the information relate to your topic or answer your question? Why?
Who is the intended audience?
• Is the information at an appropriate level (i.e. not too elementary or advanced for your needs)? How
do you know?
• Does the source type fit the assignment? Why? (For example, a history paper may use mostly
primary source materials and a science paper may rely heavily on sets of research data)
II. Packaging
What kind of source is it? (ex: blog post, social media post, book, peer-reviewed journal article,
white paper, etc.)
• Is it a primary or secondary source?
What is the purpose of the information? (HINT: Is it to inform, teach, sell, entertain or persuade?)
How do you know?
• Is the information fact, opinion or propaganda? How do you know?
• Are there political, ideological, cultural, religious, institutional or personal biases? How do you
know?
III. Origins
• Where does the information come from?
Is the information supported by evidence? How do you know?
Has the information been reviewed or refereed? (hint: Is the source peer reviewed?) How do you
know?
• Who is the author/publisher/source/sponsor?
• What are the author’s credentials or organizational affiliations?
• Is there contact information, such as a publisher or email address?
IV. Context
It is contextual in that the information need may help determine the level of authority required. For
instance, finding out what symptoms may occur upon exposure to poison ivy may not require the

atmospheric CO2 may.
What is the nature of your information need?
• Does this source have the appropriate level of authority?
Example:
The article “Influence of Sociocultural Pressures on Body Image Dissatisfaction” was published
in Psychological Studies, a peer reviewed journal (Rajagopalan & Shejwal, 2014). The purpose of the
study was to assess the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and sociocultural pressures in
Indian girls. This was clearly stated in the abstract. Both authors were affiliated with the Department of
Psychology, University of Pune, Pune, India. A quick review of the PsycInfo database indicated that both
authors have published several articles related to body image dissatisfaction in women…
