Green House Gases Research Paper Introduction and problem statementread the instruction in the PDF file uploaded below and I need to write a an introduction and a problem statement about GROUP 1 ONLY. which is ( Canada, USA, Mexico, Cuba ). ENGR 102 – Project 1 – Summer 2020
When gasses are emitted by various sources (both human and non-human related) and enter and trap
heat in the atmosphere, they are referred to as greenhouse gasses. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) is by far the
leading greenhouse gas emitted by human-related activities. According to the US Environmental and
Protection Agency, it constituted approximately 81% of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2018. CO2
enters the atmosphere through various human-related activities, including electricity and heat
production, cement production, the production of metals, and agricultural waste burning. For this
project, we will be examining CO2 emissions data from the aforementioned human-related sources from
various countries around the world.
Perform the tasks presented on the following page in a single MATLAB script file. Your output should
consist of a total of five plots, two tables, and the text mentioned in part 6. You must suppress all other
output to the command window and your code must be well commented, use mnemonic variable names
(variable names should make sense and make it easy to understand what each variable is used for), and
your code must be easy to read/follow. Tables may be created using either fprintf or table commands.
The table command is not covered in this course, but you may choose to learn more about it and use it if
you would like. Loops and conditional statements (if structures) are not permitted for use in Project 1.
You will be assigned to project teams of either 3 or 4. Each team member will be responsible for
analyzing a different country’s CO2 emissions data from different sources. Each group will decide on the
assignments of the countries amongst themselves. The group assignments are shown in the table below.
Please refer to the email sent out by your professor that identifies which group number you have been
assigned to for Project 1.
Matlab Calculations and Analysis
Please see the “ENGR 102 Project 1 Code Grading Rubric – Summer 2020.dox” file for how your
Matlab Code will be graded for each part, (1) through (6), below.
(1) Import your country’s CO2 emissions data into MATLAB (use xlsread by adjusting this syntax to your
data):
Variable_Name = xlsread(‘Project 1 CO2 Data Summer 2020′,’Sheet
Name’,’B4:AR4′)
This Excel file is located in the Project 1 Module under “Course Content” in eCampus and is titled “Project
1 CO2 Data Summer 2020.xlsx”
You’ll have one command for each source of your country’s emissions and four commands total
(Electricity and Heat Production, Cement Production, Production of Metals, and Agricultural Waste
Burning). DO NOT change the name of the Excel file or modify the Excel file in any way! For full credit
your program must be able to read data from the file in my Matlab folder without modification to the
file or the Matlab code.
(2) Make four plots, one for each of your country’s emission sources. The horizontal axis should be the
Year and the vertical axis should be the Yearly Emissions of CO2 in gigagrams for each plot. Be sure to
also include the appropriate axis labels and a title for each plot.
(3) In a separate figure, plot each of your country’s emission sources (in one plot – all the lines should be
on the same graph). The horizontal axis should be the Year and the vertical axis should be the Yearly
Emissions of CO2 in gigagrams for the plot. Be sure to also include the appropriate axis labels, a title for
each plot, and a legend.
(4) For each source of CO2 emissions, determine the maximum value, the year the maximum value
occurs, the minimum value, the year the minimum value occurs, the average value (mean), and the
median value using Matlab. The values should be output to the command window in a table, like the
one shown below.
CO2
Emissions
Source
Maximum Value
(gigagrams)
Year
Minimum Value
(gigagrams)
Year
Average
Value
(gigagrams)
Median Value
(gigagrams)
(5) For each source of CO2 emissions, determine the difference between the 2012 emissions value and
the 1970 value and the percent increase or decrease from the 1970 emissions value to the 2012
emissions value. The values should be output to the command window in a new table, like the one
shown below.
CO2
Emissions
Source
Difference between
1970 and 2012
emissions values
% Increase or
Decrease from
1970 to 2012
(6) Calculate the total CO2 emissions, the difference in total CO2 emissions between 1970 and 2012,
and the % increase or decrease in total CO2 emissions from 1970 to 2012. Then, use an output function
to show this information in the command window. The output should look something like this: “The
total CO2 emissions for [insert country here] are [number goes here], the difference in emissions
between 1970 and 2012 are [number goes here]…”
Also include, using one or more output function(s), your thoughts on which of the different emission
sources is most significant and why. Further, discuss what you predict to be the most significant source
of CO2 emissions in the future in this country. Give your thoughts on why the country has experienced
the percent increase or decrease in total CO2 emissions from 1970 to 2012 that you calculated.
The text for this section, part (6), must be at least 5 total sentences which are shown using output
commands in the Command Window in Matlab.
PROJECT 1 DELIVERABLES
These are the Project 1 deliverables (there are 6 Project 1 assignment submissions total):
1. Team Charter and Gantt Chart (5% of Project 1 grade): due Thursday, May 28th by 11:59 PM.
This is a group assignment and will be submitted as two separate documents to the same
submission link in eCampus. Please use the same format for these as what you used in ENGR
101.
2. MATLAB Code (35% of Project 1 grade): due Tuesday, June 2nd by 11:59 PM. This is an
individual assignment. You must submit code that performs the required tasks, as stated above
in steps 1 through 6. You must name your file Firstname_Lastname_Project_1.m
Remember: This portion of the project (the MATLAB code creation/submission) must be done
individually.
3. Technical Report (30% of Project 1 grade): due Thursday, June 4th by 11:59 PM. This is a group
assignment. Only one submission is required per group to the submission link on eCampus. The
format of the technical report should be the same as that which you learned in ENGR 101.
Please see the course eCampus website for ENGR 101 review material under the Start Here
section. An electronic copy must be uploaded to the submission link in eCampus by the due
date.
Note about the Background: Your background section of the technical report should include substantial
background research in the areas of CO2 emissions by the emission source, greenhouse gasses and their
impact on the atmosphere and global climate, Carbon Capture and Storage technologies, and other
topics of related to CO2, emission sources, and greenhouse gasses in general. These are examples of
topics, and you are encouraged to expand upon this selection of topics. If you are unsure if a topic is
relevant, contact your instructor.
Note about the Methodology: Concentrate on discussing your strategy for creating your program and
decision making about which emission source is most significant or looks like it will be the most
significant in the future in the Methodology section of the technical report. The Methodology should
NOT be a listing of the various MATLAB commands that were used to do various tasks in the program.
Note about the Discussion: The discussion section of the technical report should, at the very least,
address the following questions:
1. After comparing the results of the individual countries as a team, which of the countries appears
to be the largest emitter of CO2? Why do you think that is?
2. After comparing the results of the individual countries as a team, which of the countries appears
to be the largest emitter per capita (per citizen)? Look up the populations of each country to see
how much the countries emit per citizen and then compare them again. Did the result from
question 1 change? Give your thoughts on why the result did or did not change from question 1.
3. What trends did you notice among the different emission sources for each country? Does any
particular emission source seem to be growing or declining? Why might this be the case? Think
about the countries themselves, their economies, political and military considerations, etc.
4. Your discussion section should address considerations of public health and welfare, global
factors, cultural factors, social factors, environmental factors, and economic factors.
4. Poster (10% of the Project 1 grade): due Friday, June 5th by 8:00 AM. This is a group assignment.
This poster should be a single PowerPoint slide. The format should be the same as the final
Poster presentation you made in ENGR 101. If you have any questions about the format, please
contact your professor. Please make sure that all Figures/Tables/Text are clear and legible.
5. Recorded Presentation (10% of the Project 1 grade): due Friday, June 5th by 11:59 PM. This is a
group assignment. Please record your presentation using a video and audio recording program
(like Zoom). Each team member must have a speaking part and the total presentation should be
approximately 5 minutes in length. Presentations which are less than 4 minutes in length or
greater than 6 minutes in length will lose points. Please make sure to practice beforehand and
make smooth transitions between team members. Avoid reading directly off the slides or giving
the impression that you are reading directly off of a script.
6. Peer Reviews (10% of the Project 1 grade): due Sunday, June 7th by 11:59 PM. This is an
individual assignment. This will be completed via a Google Survey link that your professor will
send out. You will rate your team members based on their performance in your team and their
contributions to your group assignments. Your other group members will not see your individual
reviews. Please ask your professor if you have any questions about this.
