Grantham University Public Speaking Special Occasion Speeches STUDENT 1: I have chosen to write about the special occasion of having my daughter recently. This was a special occasion because we were not expecting a baby, but when we found out we were elated. The pregnancy was an uphill battle and there were complications during my pregnancy. I found out how strong I really am during this last pregnancy and it made her welcome to the world that much more special. She also had complications after birth, but she is a fighter just like mom, so we keep faith and stay strong for out little girl.STUDENT 2:I would like to complete my special occasion speech about my great-grandmother who passes away but had such a huge influence on our family. She was like the glue that held the family together and always made sure that we knew the importance of family. For that reason, I would like to complete a speech celebrating her life and virtue because she made such a huge impact on my life. Special Occasion Speech Assignment – 50 pts.
1. For your final speech, you will deliver a 1 ½ -4 minute toast, which is a speech of
celebration.
2. Expectations:
•Tailor your toast to the personality of the honoree and the event.
•Choose from the following occasions: ?Wedding
?Retirement ?Birthday
?Business transaction (signing of a contract, a promotion) ?Anniversary marriage, death, years in business, etc. ?Graduation ?Bar Mitzvah ?Grand
Opening ?Award /Congratulations Party after to honor the winner
•You can use part of a poem, a famous speech, a quote or even a portion of a love
letter in your toast.
•Be sincere – even if the event is made up, present it as if it were real.
•Refrain from making negative remarks since a toast is a speech of celebration – this is
a toast not a roast!
•Don’t make the honoree feel embarrassed – saying things that would make the
honoree ashamed or dampen the upbeat mood.
•Practice your toast, with glass in hand, until you can give it fluidly. Do not read
to your audience. Memorization is better than reading for this type of speech.
3. Although many toasts do not include a visual aid, I am requiring one for this speech. This
visual aid can be a picture or an item representing the person or event. It does not have to
be a PowerPoint.
4. You can make this speech fun! Feel free to be creative in picking/describing your event
and honoree – the occasions listed above can be anywhere for anyone. Just remember to
stay within the assignment guidelines and be tactful!
5. Please bring an extra copy of your full sentence, typed outline to class the night of your
speech for your instructor. An example outline is provided on the following page. Place
in the drop box if you are an online student.
6. For online classes: Your speech assignment requires you to record the speech in front of
an audience of 4 people, and you must show the audience at the beginning and end of
your video. The video must show a clear view your face and must have audible sound
that can clearly be heard with limited background noise and camera movement. You must
talk about and show visual aid during your speech to receive credit. Upload your speech
to YouTube and provide the speech link in the Blackboard forum for the week the speech
is due.
INTRODUCTION
1.
2.
3.
4.
Grab the attention of the group
Introduce the occasion
State who is being honored and what they are being honored for
Explain your relation to the honoree (why are you giving the toast)
Example:
Can I have everyone’s attention (may state while tapping a glass)! I would like to toast Krista on
her fabulous 50th birthday. Krista and I have been like sisters for over 7 years.
BODY
1. Pick one or two values or characteristics this person exemplifies.
2. Tell one or two positive/humorous and specific stories showing how they embody these
characteristics.
3. Note how these characteristics make them a wonderful partner, groom, couple, coworker, etc.
Example:
From the day we met, Krista’s kindness and generosity has ceased to amaze me. We met while
standing in the checkout line at the grocery store. I was paying for my items when I realized I
was short $5. I began searching my wallet when all of a sudden this sweet lady behind me hands
the cashier a $5 bill. I knew right then that we were going to be friends. But, this would not be
the last generous act…(another story). As you can see, Krista’s kindness and generosity not only
makes her a great friend, but the kind of human being everyone should strive to emulate.
CONCLUSION
1. Ask everyone to lift their glass/cup
2. End with a congratulatory line
Example:
So if everyone will lift their glasses with me. Krista, may you live another 50 years filled with
joy and reap all of the kindness and generosity you have given to others. Oh, and by the way,
here is your $5 back. Cheers (cling glasses if possible)!
