Grand Canyon University Practicum Reflective Journal for Nursing Report Paper Students maintained and submitted weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to explore the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. This assignment combines those entries into one course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.

This final submission should also outline what students have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses that surfaced during the process, additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, and, finally, how the student met the competencies aligned to this course.

Health disparities During week one I will say that I have spent most of my time familiarizing myself with the
course objectives and getting a stronger understanding of evidence-based practice. I feel I need
more of an understanding so that I can identify when evidence based practice is incorporated into
my own day to day nursing practice. After reading the lecture notes and going through the course
resources I see that evidence based practice is highly resourceful in the field of nursing and the
implementation continues to increase satisfactory patient outcomes.
But in week one I learned that there are issues when getting nurses to engage in evidence based
practice and adhere to the standards. Studies have shown that there are several reasons why
nurses fail to adhere to EBP standards, but some factors include, lack of time, inability to
understand statistical terms, and inadequate understanding of the jargon used in research articles.
Overall, I believe that hospitals, clinics, and medical offices should become more involved in
pushing the importance of EBP because as nurses we are always involved with clinical decisionmaking processes.
Week one has also got me acquainted with the mentor mentee relationship. I see her as an
important support system for me throughout this course, and a necessary guide throughout my
education and practice. I had a great discussion with my mentor going over the course objectives
and discussing her expectations of me along with my goals. We also came up with success
strategies and a list of readings for times when I feel overwhelmed or discouraged. Furthermore,
we agreed that communication was key throughout the course and that I active communication
was essential to be successful.
During week 2 I was able to collaborate with my preceptor to identify a specific evidence-based
topic for the capstone project change proposal. I spent a lot of my time researching clinical
problems the organization is facing, how much evidenced-based practice the nurses follow and
some of the policies and procedures the center follows. I was able to discuss and develop a
solution with my preceptor to identify a clinical practice problem and the implications it would
have on nursing practice.
During my research on my capstone project, nurse burnout; I’ve learned I have been a victim of
burnout myself. And sometimes I am to blame; by picking up too many extra shifts has lead me
into extreme fatigue and depression. Researching this topic has opened my eyes on so many
ways to avoid this. If you don’t speak up to your nurse leader nothing will change.
Researching my topic has also made me realize I have a key trait to the success of being a nurse
leader, Social awareness. Being socially aware can be quite complex. It involves caring about
what others are experiencing, understanding their needs, and responding to those needs. Social
awareness also involves understanding social networks and norms within groups, cultures, and
networks. It requires active listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively,
compassionately, and empathetically with members of the group. It also requires the ability to
identify the motivations, allegiances, and stakeholders of the group.
During Week 3 I was able to create a PICOT question incorporating an evidence-based nursing practice
intervention with my preceptor. We discussed the patient population in the surgery center and how we
could apply nursing interventions to this population. My plan promotes holistic patient care by
considering the need to customize care in line with the needs of the individual patients Adopting such
an approach will help address population health concerns
This week my ability to research evidence-based practice on my topic has improved. I’ve learned how to
navigate certain scholar website in order to find accurate information on my topic. Thinking critically
enabled me to come up with a practical individual plan for achieving my objectives. Moreover, critical
thinking nurtures analysis and synthesis skills necessary to provide holistic patient care.
I’ve also realized this week one of my weaknesses is understanding some of the center’s policies. I wrote
down a list of questions to ask my preceptor when we review these policies together. I’m hoping this
helps me in the future when I move forward with my nursing career.
During week 4 I was able to identify a change to support the nursing intervention for my
capstone project and also write measurable outcomes for the evidence-based nursing practice
intervention used in the capstone project. Thinking critically enabled me to come up with a
practical individual plan for achieving my objectives. Moreover, critical thinking nurtures
analysis and synthesis skills to interpret and apply research data in nursing practice.
Nurses working in the health policy arena have an important role in developing and
implementing the framework in which healthcare and public health systems operate. This week
I’ve realized I need to brush up on the Health policy in my facility. Health Policies have the
opportunity to influence academic grants needed to fund groundbreaking research, laws that
change how we care for individual and global health, healthcare economics and more.
One of my strengths I used during week 4 was critical thinking. I was able to work with my
preceptor to create a list of outcomes for my capstone project intervention. Not only did we
come up with interventions but we were able to provide rationales for each intervention.
During week 5 I was able to assess the organization and community for key stakeholders
and assess the potential challenges in incorporating the nursing practice intervention. Application
of communication and informatics competencies has helped in appreciating the role of
technology in improving health outcomes. Thinking critically enabled me to come up with a
practical individual plan for achieving my objectives. Moreover, critical thinking helps one to
incorporate technology in improving health care outcomes.
This week has taught me I need to brush up on possible interventions for my capstone
project. Nursing interventions are the actual treatments and actions that are performed to help the
patient to reach the goals that are set for them. This requires me to use my critical-thinking skills
to decide which interventions will help the patient and nurse the most.
One of my strengths I was able to use this week was my knowledge of technology in
nursing. Healthcare settings now utilize a wide variety of things such as: electronic records,
medication prescribing tools, tele-health, online appointment scheduling and mobile laboratories.
Nurses are all too often the key personnel required to operate these solutions and maintain the
associated data records.
