Step Two – Audience Analysis
1. Why the audience should care about this topic
The audience should care about the topic Employees Should Be Able to Work from Home
More Often, since the COVID-19 pandemic has placed flexible work arrangements in the spotlight.
Eventually, social distancing will be lifted, and businesses will reopen. However, more remotework arrangements and flexible hours may be part of the new normal.
2. Why the audience trust should my argument about the topic
The audience should trust my argument about this topic since I have commuted to and from
work and also worked remotely. I have experienced the benefits and disadvantages of both thus
can draw from my experience. Furthermore, I am using peer-reviewed sources and testimonies
from other individuals and companies to support my claim.
3. Why I am uniquely qualified to present this information to the audience
I am uniquely qualified to present this information since I have been following and
analyzing it for five years now. I have read several peer-reviewed articles and debated with various
managerial people about the topic. I have gained insights from primary and secondary sources, my
interaction with these people, and my experience working in traditional workplaces and remote
working.
4. How the audience would benefit by adopting my view

By working more from home, the audience can benefit from increased employee
productivity, better work-life balance and reduced stress for employees, enhanced personal
productivity and a better quality of life, reduced corporate utility and real estate expenses, and
reduced air pollution and traffic congestion.
Step Three – Research: Conduct some in-depth research on your approved topic. Find three
potential credible sources of information. Provide the following information for all three sources.
Sources
Clancy, M. (2020, April 13). The Case for Remote Work. Retrieved from Department of
Economics, Iowa State University:
https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/econ_workingpapers/102/
According to Clancy, research from various disciplines has made a strong case for a viable
future for telecommuting within the past decade. The article uses research to argue that
telecommuting will likely become more common in the future. This is because of higher employee
productivity, the ease of using social and technological developments to match organizations to
geographically distant workers, remote workers are cheaper, and that employees’ knowledge gain
has been decreasing because of physical interaction with other knowledge workers. The article
shows how remote working has plenty of room to continue growing.
This source supports my argument by, first of all, providing a case for remote work. The
article provides various benefits that support the adoption of telecommuting. As such, I will use
this article to draw statistics that support my point that remote working enhances employee
productivity. The article provides a literature review and research that supports this stand.

Cox, W. (2009). Executive summary: Improving the quality of life through telecommuting.
The Information on Technology & Innovation Foundation.
According to this article, there could be 19 million telecommuters who would deliver
significant environmental, economic, and quality of life benefits for the U.S by 2021. As Cox says,
telecommuting can cut costs, enhance productivity, and increase the supply of potential employees.
As such, the concept of remote working is increasingly adopted by several organizations as a
standard business strategy. The article asserts that telecommuting is set to become more popular
as a means of accessing work due to the continued expansion in broadband.
This article supports my argument by setting its tone. From my argument, employees
should be able to work more from home because remote working increases employee productivity,
better work-life balance and reduced stress for employees, enhanced personal productivity and a
better quality of life, reduced corporate utility and real estate expenses, and reduced air pollution
and traffic congestion. This article supports three of these benefits (except reduced costs and worklife balance and reduced stress) using studies and statistics. Therefore, I will use these statistics
and concepts from the paper to support these three points.

survey conducted by Owl Labs revealed than 16% of international firms are currently fully remote,

benefits of telecommuting. According to him, remote workers have a higher productivity,
companies can recruit from a global talent pool, organizations can reduce expenses, and remote
workers are happier and healthier.
This Forbes article supports my argument by giving reasons why we should adopt
telecommuting. I will thus apply this article to support my points that telecommuting enhances
productivity and reduces real estate costs. The articles provides statistical figures that I can use to
support these two points. s

Outline for Persuasive Outline: Employees Should Be Able to Work from Home More
Often
Specific Purpose: I want to persuade the audience that employees should be allowed to work from
home more often.
Thesis Sentence: More telecommuting should be practiced on a wider basis because of various
significant reasons.
Introduction
Whether it is because of gas prices, long commute times, or spending too much time sitting
on a bus, train, or car, there are very people who would reject the offer to work from home more
often. More telecommuting should be practiced on a wider basis because of various significant
reasons. Remote working should be explored more as it results in increased employee productivity,
better work-life balance and reduced stress for employees, enhanced personal productivity and a
better quality of life, reduced corporate utility and real estate expenses, and reduced air pollution
and traffic congestion.

2. Rush, a neighbor, says that he can schedule his day extremely better by
separating organizational work from personal work.

2. Working from home during COVID-19 has reduced my stress from
tiredness when driving in traffic congestion.
III.
Remote working results in higher personal productivity and better quality of life.
A. Minimizing travel time increases productivity.
1. According to Cox (2009), things being equal, it is reasonable to say that
remote working is the most productive means of accessing work since
there is no travel time.
2. I use my limited time more profitably when I commute.
B. Working from home reduces living costs and increases time for personal work.
PERSUASIVE PRESENTATION OUTLINE
4

expensive urban residential places to smaller metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas.
IV.
Telecommuting reduces costs for organizations.
A. Telecommuting reduces office space, thus reducing real estate expenses.

bringing in annual savings of $78 million.
B. More remote workers imply fewer utility bills.

2. According to American Express, their BlueWork program resulted in
$10-$15 million in real estate savings.
V.

A. Telecommuting takes cars off the road.
1. Most traffic congestion takes place during peak hours when
several employees are getting back from work.
2. Telecommuting decreases my daily vehicle travel since I do not
have to go to my workplace.
B. Remote working reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
PERSUASIVE PRESENTATION OUTLINE
5
1. Telecommuting can eliminate 126 miles of vehicle travel and 55 million
metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
2. Telecommunicators drive less, thus using less energy.
Conclusion
Working more from home is a practice that should be explored, as it has benefits extending
simply beyond increased productivity, into work-life balance and less stress, reduced air pollution
and traffic congestion, reduced real estate and utility expenses for organizations, and better quality
of life and higher personal productivity. Employees should thus be able to work from home more
often because of these reasons. Rather than merely being a millennial trend, telecommuting is
becoming a lifestyle, disrupting the traditional work environment with its more productive and
happier employees.
