Part I:
1. List the three types of plate boundaries and describe (a) the type of stress that builds up at each, and (b) the type of fault that characterizes each.
2. Describe each of the three main fault types. What is the sense of motion on each type of fault with respect to the hanging wall and foot wall?
3. What is the difference between the Richter Scale, Moment Magnitude Scale, and the Modified Mercalli Scale?
4. Compare and contrast the two types of crust (lithosphere).
5. For each of the following crust/boundary combinations list (a) the name of the tectonic setting, (b) an active example of that setting, and (c) the characteristic physiographic features and potential geologic hazards.

Part II: Web Exercise
Navigate your browser to the USGS earthquake web site (https://earthquake.usgs.gov.) On the right side of the page, find the section labeled “Significant Earthquakes, Past 30 Days” and click on the title/link. This will lead you to a map and list of the past month’s “big” earthquakes.
1. How many “significant” earthquakes were there in the past 30 days?
2. Identify the largest earthquake, and click on the event to bring up the details. Where was the epicenter and how deep was the focus? What type of tectonic setting (see above) did it occur in? What was the Moment Magnitude? What was the maximum Mercalli intensity? Was a Tsunami warning issued?
3. Identify the smallest listed earthquake, and click on the event to bring up the details. Where was the epicenter and how deep was the focus? What type of tectonic setting (see above) did it occur in? What was the Moment Magnitude? What was the maximum Mercalli intensity? Was a Tsunami warning issued?
4. In terms of the moment magnitude scale, how much larger was the largest “significant” earthquake than the smallest “significant” earthquake?
