GEO 101 Genesee Community College China Power and Politics Research Paper Please see all requirements in the attached document. All students in GEO 101 are required to complete a research paper on a topic of their choosing in which they apply course concepts to a current issue or event in a non-Western world country. The goal is to provide you with an opportunity to learn more about a specific part of the world and to sharpen your geographic awareness and understanding. For our purposes, non-Western will mean anything outside of Europe and North America. This leaves you with a list of about 150 countries. The reason for this restriction is that GEO 101 satisfies a SUNY General Education Requirement for Non-Western Civilizations. I am just going to stipulate that any country outside of North America and Europe is fine.Paper is due August 3. Requesting completion within 10 days. GEO 101: RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT
All students in GEO 101 are required to complete a research paper on a topic of their choosing in
which they apply course concepts to a current issue or event in a non-Western world country.
The goal is to provide you with an opportunity to learn more about a specific part of the world
and to sharpen your geographic awareness and understanding. For our purposes, non-Western
will mean anything outside of Europe and North America. This leaves you with a list of about
150 countries. The reason for this restriction is that GEO 101 satisfies a SUNY General
Education Requirement for Non-Western Civilizations. I am just going to stipulate that any
country outside of North America and Europe is fine.
Basic Requirements:
•
•
•
•
•
Selection of a non-Western world country to write about
Discussion of relevant geographic concepts, issues, observations and themes
4-6 pages double-spaced (not including title page, notes, bibliography)
12 point font (Times New Roman is preferred, but not required)
At least 5 academically-appropriate sources (no Wikipedia)
Recommended General Resources:
These are great resources to browse to help stimulate your thinking and find possible topics.
BBC World News (web link in Blackboard)
Country Watch (library database)
Current History (a journal available as a hard copy and online)
Foreign Policy (a journal available as a hard copy and online)
National Geographic (a journal available as a hard copy and online)
The Economist (a journal available as a hard copy and online)
Geographic Themes:
Our textbook is cleverly organized around a series of 5 recurring themes. Try to construct a topic
that dovetails nicely with one or more these themes.
Environment
Power and Politics
Urbanization
Population and Gender
Globalization and Development
Here are some sample topics. Notice how each focuses on a non-Western world country and has
connections to at least one of Pulsipher’s themes. You can use any of these topics or use them as
a guideline to create your own topic. Again, the key considerations are that you select a non-
Western world country and identify an issue which has a connection to at least one of the five
themes.
1. “From the Grand Principality of Muscovy, through Peter the Great, Stalin, and now Putin,
each Russian leader has been confronted by the same problems. It doesn’t matter if the ideology
of those in control is czarist, Communist, or crony capitalist—the ports still freeze, and the North
European Plain is still flat.” (Tim Marshall, Prisoners of Geography)
The US State Department has asked you to prepare a geographic profile of Russia which
identifies at least three challenges facing this former superpower. The paper should highlight
relevant geographical factors (examples might include landscape, climate, demographics,
cultural regions, access to natural resources) which will assist US policymakers in seeing the
world through Russian eyes.
2. Middle America is rife with poverty—with Haiti being the poorest country in the Western
hemisphere. The countries with the highest per capita incomes in the region tend to be small
island countries such as the Bahamas and Aruba. Discuss the role of the tourism industry in one
of these countries. Be sensitive to the “pros” and “cons” or “the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
3. Saudi Arabia has announced that it will allow women to drive, reversing a long-standing
policy in this highly conservative kingdom. Provide a geographic profile of Saudi Arabia-using
this policy change regarding women drivers as a focal point for illuminate larger issues.
4. “As the countries of East Asia develop economically, people have been pushing for more
political freedom. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan all have high levels of political freedom, and
demands for political change in China are increasing, especially in urban areas.”
(Lydia Pulsipher, World Regional Geography: Global Patterns, Local Lives).
Write an essay which discusses how the Chinese government has responded to protests and other
efforts to promote political change by Chinese citizens.
5. Drawing on geographic concepts, issues and themes, discuss QATAR’s successful bid to host
the 2022 world cup.
6. A few years ago, a YouTube video of Ardi Riza, a two-year old Indonesian baby, went viral.
Why? Ardi was puffing away, blowing rings, with the mannerisms of a 50-year old chain
smoker! This was not an isolated case. Indonesia has a real tobacco fix and even an epidemic of
child smokers. Develop a research paper in which to explore this cultural phenomenon by
drawing on geographic concepts and themes.
7. The Middle East has been called a “cauldron of conflict and the graveyard of empires.”
Provide an overview of the conflict in Syria which demonstrates knowledge of the region and of
geographic concepts and issues.
