Reflection

1. Provide a summary on why you chose this Healthy People 2020 topic and listed objective from the website

This topic is of interest to me, because of the population that I work with. I’m a Board-Certified Gerontology Nurse, working in a Skilled Nursing / Long-term Acute Care Setting. The majority of my patients have multiple comorbidities and mobility deficits. Chronic pain including arthritis and osteoporosis are very common in this population.

2. Describe efforts that are currently in place at the community and state level that address this topic AND objective

There are limited resources available to individuals suffering from osteoporosis. It is not something that is regularly discussed in the public as it is something that not many realize the impact that it can play into the prevention of future issues.  Many of the patients that I see suffering from chronic pain related to osteoporosis or arthritis are currently or have in the past been treated by specialized pain clinics.

3. Describe in 1-2 paragraphs how you can be involved in promotion of these efforts both as a nurse and community

member.

As a nurse, the involvement in the prevention of complications and worsening osteoporosis is huge. Patient and family education is one aspect that can greatly impact the prevention of osteoporosis and/or complications associated with osteoporosis. Making the public more aware of osteoporosis and the complications associated with it can help the community spread the word and aim to prevent further problems or new problems that contribute to fractures and life changing situations. This can in turn promote lifestyle changes to help aid in the prevention.
