Because these are open-ended questions, your answer must be consistent with the
assumptions you apply and the mechanical model you develop. In addition, the grading scale
is not correlated to the number of items expected per section, but aligned with the relative
difficulty level for that section as compared to the whole problem set.
1) Stop Sign (60 Points)
Some stop signs are designed with a spring or springdamper system to withstand an impact (i.e. an initial
velocity condition on the system). Below is an example
of such a stop sign. Model this system as a one degree
of freedom problem that is damped.
a) State given/found/assumed information. Please cite
references of where you obtain found information if
needed. (5 pt)
b) Draw the mechanical model of the system. (10 pts)
c) Draw the FBD with the minimum dimensions and
variables defined that are needed to model the system.
(15 pts)
d) Draw the ID with the minimum dimensions and
variables defined that are needed to model the system.
(15 pts)
e) Obtain the second order ordinary different equation for the system. (15 pts)
2) Chicago Draw Bridges (40 Points)
As you travel across the Chicago River in the city, you will notice that there are several
drawbridges that can be raised to let boats travel past the river to the lake in the spring and
vice versa for the fall. Select a drawbridge to perform an analysis of the vibration of the
system in bending.
a) State your references and what drawbridge you have selected. (5 pts)
b) State given/found/assumed information in order to draw your mechanical drawing of the
drawbridge. (10 pts)
c) Sketch the mechanical drawing of the system you are going to model. (5 pts)
d) Draw the mechanical model of the system in your mechanical drawing. (5 pts)
e) Draw the FBD with the minimum dimensions and variables defined that are needed to
model the system. (5 pts)
f) Draw the ID with the minimum dimensions and variables defined that are needed to model
the system. (5 pts)
g) Solve for the 2nd ODE that describes the mechanical system. (5 pts)
