Foundations of Media Arts and Production Final & Creative Assessment –
Below are some suggestions to start the creative process, in addition to the information already proposed in the Learning Guide.
The creative assessment is your opportunity to explore and express ideas, themes, emotions, mood, atmosphere, stylistic approaches, stories through a sequence of images.
You are being asked to consider ways in which creativity is applied through images & the moving image.
Your ideas can be expressed in a sequence of stills images
Or a sequence of moving images shot on video
The choice is yours depending on the medium you are most comfortable with. You can choose any subject you wish to explore in the genre of your choice. It may be a real life subject that you can explore in documentary style, or it can be done as a dramatic recreation. It can be a fictional story or a sequence of images that express an idea or emotion in an abstract style; or a mix of any or all of the above
As we have seen throughout the semester the moving image, can cover an unlimited range of genres & subject matter. There are many examples of blended genres and of simple stories well told using images. Use the knowledge you have learned this semester to inform your work.
What are the areas that have interested you? What are the areas that you are interested in learning more about? What are some topics, themes & ideas that matter to you, that you wish to tell a story about, or explore through images? Are there characters or people that you would like to depict on screen through their stories?
Take some time to think & consider, to observe. Take some time perhaps to just go out to a location that interests you and see what you observe. What is there that appeals to you visually? Take some photos, bring them back, look over your work. Is there a theme or pattern emerging? Is there something else you could observe? Go out again.
Even if you go out with no clear idea but simply use the time to observe & capture images within the frame, then see what you bring back.

Do some research, look at examples of images, photographs, paintings, moving image sequences that express ideas, tell stories, communicate an emotion, mood, feeling, or atmosphere. Allow yourself to explore freely what you notice & capture images of your observations Perhaps explore examples of photojournalism sequences.

You could take some time over the coming week, to create a series of diary entries, recording your visual observations, see if a narrative emerges, that creates a sense of a sequence that moves from one point to another. You could observe your friends, family, people you know (with their permission of course…) through a sequence of images in documentary style. See if you can discover a potential narrative or thematic thread as you go.
Remember that you make creative decisions every day, and if you take time, you can stand back and observe some of those decisions. Explore how they might inform an image and/or narrative sequence. What are you experiencing right now that can be told through images that you can shoot & arrange in a sequence; that expresses an idea, mood, emotion, atmosphere or story?
Give yourself time to experience the creative process observing, sensing, noticing, expressing, composing, shaping. Then see what occurs….
