Discussion Board about Environmental Issue( Each question answer will have 4 complete sentences)

1. When you put your trash in the trash can, where does it go? The landfill is not the correct answer. I mean specifically, where does it end up? The exact location and how does it get there and the answer is not “the trash truck”. 2. When you hear the words “environmental issues”, tell me three things that come to mind? Be specific in your answer. 3. Modern environmentalism is a term used to describe an information-based perspective supporting the need for harmony between industrial objectives and environmental goals. In your opinion, is pollution an expected byproduct of manufacturing? Explain in detail. 4. Describe “Global Warming” and give me your opinion on whether or not it exists. Critical Thinking Essay
Minimum requirements for the essays are outlined below:
(a) one page to two pages (double-spaced, 10-12 pt font) in length;
(b) express a conclusion(s)/position(s)/answer(s) to the issue(s);
(c) justify your conclusion(s) based on evidence presented in the video, from the textbook,
and/or other legitimate sources and
(d) contain no more than 1 typographical, grammatical, or punctuation error.
When expressing and justifying your conclusion(s), you do not necessarily have to agree with
any particular viewpoint or conclusion. However, you do need to clearly outline your position
on the issue and how it relates to the relevant content from class. When justifying your
opinion, you need to back it up with some combination of evidence from your textbook, the
video(s), logical reasoning, hypothetical examples, personal experience, etc. If you use
information from other sources, be sure to provide a reference. For example, if you use
information from the textbook, say so. If you use information from the internet, be sure
to include the website address as a reference.
Here is a list of the possible Critical Thinking Issues.
1. Memory
Using concepts from the video and from your textbook, formulate one explanation that might
explain how a real, traumatic, and previously forgotten event could suddenly be remembered.
In addition, using concepts from the video and from your textbook, formulate an explanation
for how people could remember something that never happened (i.e., false memory).
2. Intelligence
In the textbook, several different opinions about the nature of intelligence are offered. But
what really constitutes intelligence? How should intelligence be defined? What is the best way
to measure it? Are the standard intelligence tests (e.g., WAIS, Stanford-Binet) adequate?
3. Motivation
Keeping the general characteristics of motivation in mind, as well as the various theories of
motivation described (e.g., Maslow’s hierarchy of needs), how could an effective plan be
devised to motivate an unmotivated student to study and get a good grade in this class.
Describe an original plan of your own or expand upon/critique someone else’s.
4. Psychological Disorders
Given the social stigma of being labeled with a psychological disorder, should people who
receive such a diagnosis tell their friends, family, coworkers, and/or boss/employer? Be sure to
consider both the positive and negative aspects of sharing this information before making your
conclusion.
5. Therapy
Read the following scenario and then decide which approach to therapy (humanistic,
psychodynamic, or cognitive-behavioral) you would recommend for Ellen? Justify your answer
(Helpful hint: Before making you decision, identify what you expect a therapist from each
approach to focus on or do, and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. This will
help you reach a conclusion).
Ellen looked awful. She said she had spent three relatively sleepless nights and had eaten little,
and it showed. She couldn’t sleep because she felt tormented by feelings of shame, guilt, and
loss. She thought that it had nothing to do with her family. She had been “happily married” for
nine years. The family members were all healthy. The family was financially stable and
seemed to have a strong network of support in the community. Nothing was really wrong with
them. Oh, sure, the kids and her husband weren’t home much. He worked overtime very
often. The kids were always running to soccer or other commitments. But that was the way it
was supposed to be. Ellen thought her “blues” had more to do with her brother. She hadn’t
been able to escape strong feelings of self-recrimination since her brother died. They had had
a serious fight the night before his car accident, and she had never had a chance to apologize.
The last few months had been a nightmare because of the impact her unrelenting sadness was
having on Ellen and her family (from Halonen & Gray, 2001).
6. Video games and Violence
Anderson and Dill (2000) that explored whether there is any connection between violent video
games and aggressive behavior. One goal was to understand the causes of tragedies such as
the shooting that occurred at Columbine High School in a suburb of Denver, Colorado, in April,
1999. Are you convinced that there is a connection between playing violent video games and
aggressive behavior? Why or why not?
7. Sleep cycles and Everyday Life
Think about what happens to a firefighter/paramedic as he/ she tries to cope with the demands
of working 24-hour shifts. Parts of these shifts include scheduled periods of time for sleeping
(e.g., daytime nap, evening slumber), but these periods of sleep are often interrupted. Why
does he/ she might have trouble sleeping when he. she does try to sleep? Why does he/ she
often not feel rested afterward? When and how should one try to sleep on his/ her days off
from work?
8. Classical and Operant Conditioning
Some of the basic principles of operant and classical conditioning and how these concepts are
incorporated into basic training in the United States Marine Corp. Given the success United
States Marine Corp drill sergeants have using classical and operant conditioning in disciplining
new recruits, should parents become “drill sergeants” and discipline their children using similar
techniques? Do you think we would have fewer misbehaving children and delinquent
adolescents if more parents raised their children like a USMC drill sergeant? Do you think it is
advisable for parents to parent like a drill sergeant? Would there be negative side effects?
9. Infant and Child Development
Consider a couple with two young children, ages 1 and 2 ½ years, who are both physicians
completing their residencies. To complete their residencies, they are required to work at least
60 hours per week. Their children are in a daycare 11 hours each day for five days a week and
also generally spend at least one full day per week with grandparents. Although these parents
admit being very stressed most of the time and would prefer to work less and spend more time
with their children, they reason that their residencies will only last about 2 years and that their
children will remember nothing from these stressful early years and thus will not be affected.
What do you think? Do you think the children will be affected? If so, how? If not, why not?
