FNU Johnson Nursing Diagnostic and Treatment Process Discussion Nurses use Johnson’s nursing diagnostic and treatment process to enable the restoration, maintenance, or attainment of behavioral integrity in patients. Johnson’s process involves several key components that guide evidence-based nursing interventions. I believe that Johnson’s diagnostic and treatment process enables nurses to meet the standards of practice relating to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.

The four components of Johnson’s process are the identification of the problem, its diagnostic classification, the management of nursing problems, and the evaluation of behavioral system integrity after treatment (Masters, 2014). The first two components relate to the assessment and diagnosis standards. These standards emphasize systematic data gathering, the involvement of a patient’s significant others, the use of appropriate diagnostic techniques, and a diagnosis derived from the assessment data. Nurses gather and analyze data on the structure, balance, and stability of a patient’s behavioral system to identify any threats to a patient’s physical and social health. Moreover, a critical step during the assessment stage is interviewing a patient and his or her family or caregiver to determine the integrity of different components of a patient’s behavior (Butts & Rich, 2017). The gathered data enables evidence-based inferences regarding the organization and interaction of different behavioral components.

Once a nurse has identified the existing problem(s), he/she will develop and implement evidence-based interventions to restore a patient’s behavioral system balance and stability. The main goal of this step is to help a patient achieve optimal functioning. Finally, according to Johnson’s nursing diagnostic and treatment process, a nurse evaluates a patient’s behavioral system balance and stability after treatment to determine if a patient has attained the optimal level of balance and functioning (Smith, 2019). A nurse modifies the care plan accordingly if a patient has not attained the desired indices of behavioral system integrity.
