Health care has faced pressure to come up with innovative designs, or redesign its workflows to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. Changes in workflow come about as a response to changes in an organization. The introduction of healthcare information technology is an important reason why workflow is a pressing concern in healthcare as it incorporates the activities of all healthcare providers so as to concentrate on the precise healthcare needs of the patient. Organizations embarking on implementing an EHR, and the role of the informaticist is to direct others in on how to manage the system. This can be done one at a time in a sequence to create communication and progression. Workflow analysis is important as it involves paying special attention to detail and capitalizing on the use of technology and removing activities that add no value (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).

Utilizing Kotter’s change theory to make technological changes in an organization is a great way to prepare my work staff with the skills necessary to perform workflow analysis and redesign the clinical process. John Kotter (Pollack & Pollack, 2015) asserts that in order for change to be successful it is important to: increase the urgency for the change, facilitate “buy-in” from stakeholders, create a vision for the change, communicate the vision, remove any hindrance to the change that may cause set-backs, produce results that are a quick-fix to build staff confidence, build on that change and keep looking for ways to improve, and ensuring that the change becomes a part of the organizational culture. To create change in an organization that is successful requires hard work and dedication and improvements to new technology.

As a perspective MSN graduate, I believe that it’s imperative for leaders to ensure an effective workflow system is in place for staff members to provide high quality and safe patient care. Master level graduates are prepared to lead in organizational change that may include redesigning clinical processes. A productivity workflow system requires a strong leader and organizational structure to meet patient care needs. People with a broad set of relevant skills find greater satisfaction from their jobs (Combi & Pozzi, 2018). Because they feel more valuable and are able to utilize a wider skillset, they also tend to produce more during the workday than those with fewer skills. Having a higher level of knowledge such as a master’s level degree, is seen as a benefit for organizational leaders.

They understand that a well-educated and trained employee could teach staff members the necessary skills for preforming workflow analysis. When effective clinical processes are utilized, it has been proven to help employees do a better job in their current position and prepares them for future responsibilities, it gives them a sense of value. Sometimes the skills employees learn on the job can also help them in their personal lives, contributing to stress reduction and improved well-being (Richardson, 2020). For example, learning a new language or finding ways to use new technology makes people more versatile both on and off the job. Educational value has always been key for implementing effective evidenced based processes within healthcare to ensure patients are provided with safety and high-quality healthcare.
