Change is an inevitable process in any profession inclusive of nursing. Changes in care delivery, increased patient expectations, technology and the role of nurses are evolving, and nurses have to keep up with the changes. Planned change in nursing is effective because nurses are prepared for a new direction, and the process is usually flawless (Cogley, 2019). Besides, this type of change considers the nurses in implementation to make it successful. Whether the change is expected or unexpected, nurses need the motivation to change. Motivation can come from the institution, themselves or the profession which is highly susceptible to change.

Change management refers to the approaches for preparation, support in times of change. An institution should have principles on change management to ease the implementation process on nurses (Cogley, 2019). However, change can face resistance due to variety of reasons. In nursing, resistance is common, but the institution should set up means to reduce resistance or combat it. Another response to change is the emotional response. Nursing involves empathy and change can cause emotional responses that can determine the success or failure of the change process.

If an institution is responsible for the change, the desired outcome is effective change. To achieve this, the change process should be systematic and consider the nurses and patient’s needs. Advanced Practice Nurses play a key role in change because they can influence acceptance or resistance to changes (Padmaja, 2017). Furthermore, they should spearhead change to motivate other nurses on the positive impact of the changes which improve the change process.
