EXPERIENTIAL ESSAY
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of writing
fundamentals and application of APA 6th ed. Guidelines.
Experiential
Essay
Topic
The experiential learning method is based on the relationship between learning
and experience. Individuals acquire these experiences outside of the traditional
academic classroom setting, which may include deployments, professional duties
held, and service-learning projects. Use the following as a guide for your essay.
Think of a meaningful experience you had that triggered the learning cycle. In
other words, an experience you learned from. This is referred to as your concrete
experience (feeling). Your concrete experience must relate to one of the topics
below.
Step back from your concrete experience to reflect (watching) on it. What did
you learn from it? What did you observe?
The next stage is to make sense of what happened. Give theories. Give facts.
This is the best stage to include your reference and in-text citation. You can draw
upon theory or regulation for framing knowledge you developed because of your
concrete experience. This stage is called Abstract Conceptualization
(thinking).
In this final stage, consider how you are going to put (or have already put) what
you learned into practice. This stage is called Active Experimentation (Doing).

Instructions
1. Correctly applying the APA 6th ed. guidelines for writing, write an
experiential essay. Your essay must:
• be a MS Word document
• include a Title page and Reference page
• be developed around one of topics above
• include an introduction and conclusion in the body
• be a minimum of one full page (does not include the Title page
or Reference page)
2. Upload and submit your essay to the Experiential Essay Student Check in
blackboard. This tool checks for cited work and potential plagiarism.
Make corrections, if needed.
3. Upload and submit your essay for grading by clicking on the Experiential
Essay link in blackboard.
4. This assignment will be evaluated on following all assignment instructions
and rubric criteria.
