Excelsior College M6 Knowledge of Biostatistics Paper While the goal of medicine is to improve the health of an individual, the pharmaceutical company which manufactures the medicine is responsible for earning money also. In order to do this, they have to market the drug to a targeted audience (we have all seen the commercials for pharmaceuticals). How the data is presented can have a big impact on an individual’s perspective of the pharmaceutical they are learning about. In this discussion, we will apply our current knowledge of biostatistics to evaluate how the presentation of data can be used to impact the opinion of an individual.

The first question is opinion and/or experience-based so that you can begin the discussion immediately without having completed all of your readings. You must apply your assigned readings to subsequent questions.

You are working with a pharmaceutical company to develop a new drug to treat disease X. Your company comes up with two potential treatments and the outcome of interest is cure. For instance, 0=No cure, 1=Cure and an OR>1 represents a greater chance of cure. The first treatment, Drug A was developed two years ago and has been tested on 1,000 people with an OR for cure of 1.05 and a 95% CI of (1.04, 1.06) and a p-value < 0.01. The second treatment, Drug B was developed only a few months ago and has been tested on 50 people with an OR for cure of 1.75 and a 95% CI of (.99, 3.50) and a p-value > 0.05. Based on this information if you had disease X which treatment would you prefer and why?
