models, or philosophies that the author presents. Of course there needs to be some
description included, but your writing should concentrate more on your analysis of these
components rather than merely summarizing the author’s ideas. When you analyze the
text you might ask yourself the following types of questions1
and then discuss the
answers you conclude in the body of your paper.
o Is what the author saying feasible and/or practical in terms of time and money?
o Is what the author saying logical within our educational culture/climate?
o Is what the author saying beneficial for teachers, administrators, politicians,
parents, students, or any combination of these groups?
o Is what the author saying controversial in nature– Will these ideas alienate
specific groups within our society; will they marginalize specific groups within
our society?
o Is what the author is saying confusing or ambiguous?
o Is what the author is saying appropriate for the intended audience?
You must explain why an idea, position, or comment is impractical or beneficial or
ambiguous, or too expensive, etc. You will want to use textual evidence in your
discussion, being sure to include parenthetical citations for quotes and paraphrased
statements in MLA or APA format. Robin F. Amparo, Ed.D.

Book Review Requirements & Instructions
Please follow the following guidelines for the book review assignment.
Many students confuse a book review with a book report, and as such, offer very little
analysis of the text. This book review is NOT a summary of the book – it is an in-depth
discussion of the ideas, concepts, and philosophies that the author presents. Your
discussion should include observations, inferences, questions, and/or judgments that you
formulate based on the reading.

Introduction
Your opening remarks should include the title of the book, author, and date of
publication. The first paragraph should identify the author’s purpose for writing this book
and explain its target audience. For example, some publications are written specifically as
textbooks for teacher-education programs, while others are written for parents or for
politicians. Your introduction should clearly state the author’s main idea or assertion (the
fundamental idea or position that the author will develop throughout the book), and
continue with an explanation of the organizational structure that the author uses (i.e.- Part
I is theoretical and Part II of the book is practical application of the theory).
Body

Conclusion
The final comments of your paper should synthesize your overall commentary with an
insightful remark – perhaps a suggestion for further research in this area, or the need for
additional information, or a rebuttal to the author’s basic position.
General formatting
Please use a clean (easy to read) font at 12 points/double space/one inch margins all
around/staple in the left-hand corner. Book reviews should be 3-5 pages in length.
A note to the Graduate students:
Your cover page should replace the bibliographic information with a title for your
paper. Please attach a reference page to the end of your paper with the
bibliographic information of the text plus your additional sources. The book and
literature review (at least 3 peer reviewed journal articles that enhance your
analysis of the book) should be 5-7 pages in length.
