Assignment 2: Engaging the Conversation

In this unit, we begin to broaden our sense of the research about human gullibility by considering the
many factors Hugo Mercier reviews in the second half of his essay, “How Gullible Are We?” We also
consider Mercier’s argument that humans are not as gullible as most people might think, even given the
wealth of research that he cites on the subject.
Write an essay in which you engage Mercier’s argument that humans are not as susceptible to some of
these factors as we might think. Choose a smaller set of Mercier’s examples to work with, and provide
real-life example(s) drawn from your own experience to agree with, disagree with, or amend Mercier’s
conclusions. Your purposes in this assignment are as follows:
• show the reader that you understand how Mercier defines these examples from culture and
weighs them against humans’ abilities to resist gullibility (which he describes in the first half of
his essay);
• give the reader a clear and detailed sense of your opinion of Mercier’s argument about these
factors and human gullibility;
• support your opinion about Mercier’s argument with descriptions and explanations of your own
examples.
