Essay instructions and the essay has been attached. Writing Project #2: Research Synthesis
Purpose/Goals: While we might think a social issue is simple, the fact is that it is usually quite
complex. There are only two sides to an issue, there are usually multiple parties who have a stake
in the issue, and they may all have different reasons for being for or against something. Before
making an argument of your own, you need to understand where others stand on an issue, and
what information, or research, is vital for making a strong argument.
Assignment Description: For your second paper, you will be exploring and synthesizing the
many perspectives on your social issue. Your goal is to look at a variety of sources and
determine the multiple viewpoints on the issue. To do this, you will need to identify the different
parties involved and detail their specific views on the issue. This means pushing beyond “for” or
“against” and explaining why and how these parties are at a disagreement with one another.
Once you have identified these various viewpoints, your essay should synthesize the differing
views to create a non-judgmental analysis of your issue and bring that analysis to the broader
community. In other words, you are not making your own argument, but informing your
audience about how other groups feel regarding your topic. Your goal is to answer the
following question: who is affected by your topic, what are their views on it, and what do you see
as the major points of tension among these views?
Though your research topic is your choice, there are some guidelines for selecting your research
topic.
1) The topic needs to be a current issue; this means that you cannot work on any topic that has
already been resolved, or is no longer relevant.
2) You should not write about the following list of topics: teen pregnancy, abortion,
changing the drinking age, legalizing marijuana, gun control, the death penalty, physicianassisted suicide or steroid use among athletes.
3) Remember, you need to be able to establish and support your claims throughout the semester
with credible research.
Source Requirement: You will be required to integrate a minimum of five (5) sources into your
actual essay, though you can (and probably should) pull on more. You need to have a variety of
different sources (newspaper and magazine pieces, informational websites, books, journal
articles, interviews, etc.). You must determine that all your sources are credible and relevant to
your topic. Personal websites and blogs, general information sites (Wikipedia, etc.), definition or
quote cites (Dictionary.com, BrainyQuote.com, etc.), and discussion boards and forums are not
acceptable sources. At least three (3) of your sources must be scholarly and come from the
ASU Library Database.
What to Do/What Not to Do: This assignment is a research-based paper in which you are
exploring the various viewpoints on your topic to identify what the major points of tension are.
This means that in this paper you are not taking a side on the issue. While your issue may have
two sides, you will find that there are various individuals and groups that have a stake in your
topic, so you are responsible for learning about these groups and their views. Your paper should
not just be organized to represent the sides “for or against,” but instead talk about why different
people/groups have different views on the same issue. In terms of your sources, see the
requirements above, and remember that you want to provide a blend of direct quotes and
paraphrases throughout your paper.
Intended Audience:
A member of your target audience that is a person or group that is unfamiliar with the specific
issue you are discussing.
English 121 Assignment Goals:
-Use writing and reading for inquiring, learning, thinking, and communicating
-Effectively supporting your positions and assertions
-Be able to analyze and evaluate different kinds of texts for rhetorical effect
-Integrate your own ideas with those of others
Length/Format:
Your paper should be a minimum of 1400-1600 words. This does not include the Works Cited
page, title or first page header. Your paper should be in 12 point Times New Roman or Calibri
font, double-spaced, have 1” margins on all sides, and follow MLA 8th Edition. You must cite all
sources in-text, and provide a complete Works Cited page that includes all outside sources.
Grading Criteria:
-You should use MLA format correctly in both formatting the paper and citing sources
-Your paper should integrate a variety of outside sources into your writing
-Your paper should present the multiple points of view (at least three) on the issue to your
audience while maintaining an objective perspective
-Your paper should inform the reader on what the source of the controversy is concerning your
issue

Effects of Internet Use on Young People’s Social Skills
The advancement of technology is considered both a blessing and a curse by different
people. Today, the use of computers and the Internet have simultaneously developed and are used
in various industries and sectors in making work more accessible. “The internet is also a part of
the technology that many of us have come to appreciate.” In the current century, it is right to say
that the Internet is essential to the world and its development. Through the advancement of
technology, there has been an emergence of social media platforms that have made interaction
between people simpler and faster than before. Individuals across the globe, from different
countries and regions overseas, can send messages, share pictures, or post updates that can be read
or viewed by a person who is located in a different geographic area (Organisation for Economic
Co-operation Development, n.p).
Recently, people have claimed that the Internet use such as Instagram is causing more harm
than good in society. However, others view it as having a positive influence. Sadly, the majority
of people who have been impacted by Internet services such as social media are teenagers and
young adults. Before the birth of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram and the
Internet, human beings had different ways of socializing and communicating with each other. Most
interactions took place on a one-on-one and face-to-face basis. However, with the emergence of
social media, social skills have slowly been dying as time progresses. The purpose of this paper is
Ma 2
to bring up two sides of the argument regarding both the negative and positive impact of the
Internet on young people.
It is essential to know what social skills are before exploring how the Internet has impacted
these skills. Social skills refer to the tools that human beings use to interact and connect with their
fellow human beings (“Social Skills.” n.p). they include making eye contact, smiling and laughing
with each other or about something, and asking and answering questions. These skills are not
always taught. However, people learn them as they interact with one other. Continued interactions
usually lead to social connection, and individuals frequently end up understanding each other’s
social preferences. Such communications can be both verbal and non-verbal.
Facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, and direct wording are the most common
ways of expressing social skills. With the growth and development of the Internet, people are now
spending most of their time socializing through computers. Online social interaction has been seen
as a detriment to the practice of developing social skills. The evolution of technology through the
Internet and the introduction of social media platforms have been found to limit social skills. Some
of these skills include leadership, empathy, conflict resolution, communication, and the expression
of emotions (O’Keeffe et.al, p.127).
Different parties are involved in this argument and give various reasons to support their
standpoint. The educational fraternity, which includes teachers and other educationalists, believes
that the use of the Internet has negatively affected young people’s social skills. The other party
includes technology experts who have insisted that the use of the Internet has positively affected
social skills among young adults and teenagers. This essay will start with the viewpoint of the
education fraternity who claim that the Internet has caused more harm than good when it comes to
social skills. They have argued that the use of the Internet by teenagers has led to social isolation.
Ma 3
The education fraternity claims that teenagers nowadays can be glued to the Internet for
the better part of the day watching videos on YouTube or browsing through various social media
platforms such as Instagram without getting into physical contact with anyone else. Before the
introduction of the Internet, people used to meet in familiar places such as basketball courts to
share ideas, laugh, and play together. That aspect of social interaction has been steadily declining
since the rise of the Internet. The education fraternity argues that even on the few occasions that
people would meet, most of them would always be on their phones and not interacting verbally
with each other (O’Keeffe, p.127).
Educationalists have also argued that the Internet has led to a kind of addiction that has
made it almost impossible to separate a teenager from their devices. Internet addiction has not only
affected teenagers’ social behavior but also changed the way they learn and the kind of education
they receive. Educationalists argue that most teenagers are now utilizing the Internet to access
virtual casinos, engage in interactive games, and participate in other virtual activities that have
changed the way they socialize. Most teenagers cannot be found playing in parks or playgrounds
because they are always on their screens playing online games.
Online games have replaced physical games and reduced the aspect of socialism and one
on one interaction that existed before. Because of such advancements, teenagers are unable to learn
different skills from each other (O’Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson, p. 83). Educationalists argue against
the negative impact of the Internet due to the outcomes which have affected the teenagers regarding
academics and socialization. Educationalists have seen a lack of concentration among students in
class first hand due to their addiction to the Internet and social media. Most students have been
adversely affected to the point that they have self-esteem and self-confidence issues.
Ma 4
The other party, which includes technical experts, argues that the Internet has positively
affected young people’s social skills. The experts assert that the creation of relationships through
social skills is about sharing our lives with others and that technology and the Internet have had a
positive impact in this regard (O’Keeffe et.al, p.127).They argue that through the use of the Internet
and the various social media platform available, teenagers can share photos, videos, texts, and
music all in the spirit of socialization. Nowadays, teenagers use social media to share and interact
extensively. The technology experts ascertain that the use of the Internet has gone to the extent of
influencing interaction beyond country borders and across continents. This fete was not achievable
through the traditional methods of socialization.
Today, a teenager in Europe can easily communicate and interact with a counterpart in
Asia without physically meeting up (O’Keeffe et.al, p.127). They can video call each other and
share experiences, and this is the essence of socialization. Gaming is also one of the ways through
which teenagers and young adults can enhance their social skills with friends and even make new
friends. Technologists argue that the introduction of the Internet has led to the development of the
gaming industry by providing an online gaming platform that teenagers can use to interact with
one another in different parts of the world. They are only required to log in on their accounts and
choose a partner to play games together. The most popular games in this field include but are not
limited to, The Call of Duty, Fifa, and others (Kowert et.al, p.1874).
Technologists also argue that the use of social media platforms such as Instagram have not
only provided teenagers with an avenue to post their pictures but also share their ideas. The Internet
has provided a platform through which they can speak their mind without being judged in any way
(Oktan et.al p. 1425). Through anonymous internet access, teenagers can express themselves and
offer a topic of discussion which their counterparts and other interested parties can follow and
Ma 5
discuss (O’Keeffe et.al, p.127). Friendship can be built through such platforms and lead to physical
meet-ups between people who met through the Internet, and this aspect has dramatically influenced
social skills in ways that were not possible before. The platforms available on the Internet have
also gone ahead and created an online community in which people share information that might
be helpful to their lives. Technology experts support the use of the Internet because it is
continuously evolving and offering new channels of communication. They believe that through
the access of the Internet, teenagers will, at some point, advance and come up with improvements
on different aspects of socialization that will be of advantage to the technological world. They
believe that the development of technology through the Internet relies on the young generation
who have different innovative ideas (O’Keeffe et.al, p.127).
In conclusion, both parties have undoubtedly seen the benefits of the Internet and the
drawbacks concerning teenagers’ social skills. Still, there are important reasons to be concerned
about the social interaction of teenagers in society. Therefore, it is vital to ensure the maintenance
of the balance between online life and physical contact with human beings. The main point of the
contention between both parties is the actual contact with human beings that is lacking among
teenagers. That said, teenagers should be trained on how to achieve the balance that will help them
maintain the social skills that are important in life. What if the Internet shuts off one day? What
would happen to those who were used to the online experience? Maintaining a healthy balance is
essential for young people to prevent adverse effects when there is a shutdown of the Internet.
