In Sweat, we see how individuals are affected when a factory takes its jobs overseas, and the union cannot help its workers.Research and write about the ongoing debate about current issues facing unions in the United States today.Two specific issues that you might research (you can pick one or the other – writing about both might be too much for one essay) are the Supreme Court’s Janus Decision and the ongoing debate in many states about so-called “Right to Work” Laws.

Many of the characters in Sweat, when faced with losing their livelihood and no way to keep making a living, fall into drug addiction and cannot cope.But at the end of the play, Cynthia, Jason, and Chris are all taking steps to build new lives.This quality of finding a way to continue and rebuild in the face of enormous challenges is often termed resilience by researchers.Research and write about what scientists have learned about how to develop resilience and encourage it in others.You might also research and write about shame, which the parole officer, Evan, in the play tells Jason and Chris can be an obstacle to rebuilding your life after tragedy – causing them to go to the bar and see Stan.What does the research show about what shame is and how it can negatively affect our ability to heal and move forward after traumatic events?And what does the research show about how to deal with shame?

In Night Sky with Exit Wounds, Ocean Vuong writes about his family’s experience as Vietnamese refugees.One common challenge facing refugee and immigrant families is the fact that the older generations (parents and grandparents) often feel connected to the home culture (in Vuong’s case, Vietnam), and the younger generation identifies more with the customs and values of the adopted new culture (in Vuong’s case, American culture).You could write about what research shows about how families can navigate these challenges.Other topics related to Vuong’s book you might research and write about are the advantages to brain development that children who are raised bilingual have and/or the particular challenges LGBTQ children in refugee or immigrant families have in coming out to their families.

Many of the works we have read this semester have dealt with death and have encouraged us to look at death not as something scary and dreadful but as something that we might face with courage, peace, and even curiosity.Research and write about the hospice movement and how it is encouraging terminally ill patients and their families to consider the concept of the “good death” and how it is challenging mainstream views of the end of life much like several of the works we read in class do.

Virginia Woolf argues that women simply do not have the same access to resources and power that men have.Research and write about an issue related to the condition of women in America today.To what extent have conditions for women improved in the last hundred years?To what extent do women still face greater obstacles?To consider these questions, you might focus your essay and research on one of the following issues: the fight for equal pay for equal work, the term “rape culture” and what it means and what evidence exists that it is real (or not), and/or what research reveals about how herterosexual married couples divide up housework.

While this assignment is designed to give you some freedom in the selection of your topic, whatever topic you choose, you should design an essay that in some way explores a social issue raised by a work of literature we have read and discus how current research on the issue informs or is informed by the work of literature we read.

In addition, in your essay, you should make sure to respond to these three questions:

Is the problem or issue raised by the work of literature still a problem today?If so, to what extent?

Does the work of literature accurately reflect the difficulty and/or nature of the problem or issue?If so, how? If not, why not?

Are there any important aspects of the issue or the problem that the work of literature doesn’t capture?If so, what are they?

While there are many ways you may approach your topic, in most cases whatever your topic or your purpose, the following conventions of formal writing will probably make that purpose clearer:

An introductory section with a clear thesis statement
Distinct supporting sections, with clear topic sentences, which support your thesis, with specific details to support your points. The supporting sections of your paper should include some quotations from your outside sources followed by in-text citations.

A concluding section in which you discuss the implications of your research and what you have written about it.
A Works Cited page in which you list the sources you consulted for this paper.We will go over the format for this paper in class.Essay Fours without “Works Cited” pages will not be accepted.

Here is how each part of your work on this essay will count towards your final grade on it:

Annotated Bibliography of your sources
Tentative outline of your essay due on

This paper should be 6-8 pages long NOT including the Works Cited page.
