Thank you in advance!! Arguing a Position: (As a way of generating a research paper)
ENG 101
Arguing a Position is one of the rhetorical or critical thinking strategies that often begins the
process of writing a research paper. Like Cause and effect, Arguing a Position is another of the
thinking avenues we will examine in considering a subject for a research paper. Other avenues or
“Rhetorical Strategies” we will look at are Making a Proposal and Evaluating a subject. The
topic for your research paper can be any you choose. However, as we discuss your subject
together, I will help guide you to the most appropriate Rhetorical Strategy. Below are the basic
components of this type of paper.
Arguing a Position on a Controversy: Basic Features
1. A Clearly Defined Controversy
2. A Clearly Defined Position/Argument (Thesis)
3. A Convincing Argument
Arguing a Position begins with a complex controversy, whether large or small.
1. The argument over the relative worth of earning a college degree.
2. The controversy over the argued preferential treatment of college athletes
3. The divergent opions over the relative worth of a certain genre of music (Rapp, for
example).
4. The controversy over the relative merits of a social/protest movement (Black Lives
Matter)
5. The issue over the appropriateness of the measures taken against Covid 19.
Articles and research papers have been written about these very subjects in attempts to support
one side of a particular controversy over the other. A student model research paper arguing a
position is posted on Moodle below this instructional handout.
Research Paper
Pre Writing: Topics for Research
Your first step with this, as with the previous paper, is to brainstorm ideas. For this
pre writing, I would like you to come up with a list of at least three different topics
you think you might be able to work with. For each topic, write a sentence or two,
giving your thoughts about the subject. To give you some examples, below is a list
of topics from former students.
Note: Reminder: The research paper is a minimum of six pages and six sources.
However, the basic principle for writing this paper is the same as the first two; this
one is just a bit longer. Please review all student models for this paper and watch
the supplemental videos.
List of Examples from Student Research Paper Topics:
1. Border Security: I want to argue a position on how people don’t realize
how complex a task it is for border officials.
2. Single Parenting: The effects of raising a child alone: How the phenomenon
of single parenting is not only hard on mothers but on fathers too.
3. Baseball’s Popularity: I would like to write about the factors that have
contributed to baseball’s upsurge in popularity in the last five years.
4. Border Wall: Proposal for some alternatives to building a large-scale,
comprehensive wall along the U.S./Mexico border.
5. Resistance Training: Many claim that weight lifting is all about vanity, but
if done correctly it can maintain health better than programs like Pilates or
Yoga.

Summer Camp:
The School Away from School
I attended Camp Kamaji for Girls during the summer of 1996 when I was fourteen years
old. While I was there I made new friends, experienced fun new activities, went on a three day
canoe trip, and learned that having fun is more important than winning. One of the key aspects of
going away to a summer camp is just that… going away. It is hard for kids to be away from
home, especially for an extended period of time. It is also hard on the parents because they aren’t
ready for their “babies” to “grow up.” Studies have shown that “Camps, more than some other
youth programs, provide positive developmental environments for youth, especially in providing
supportive relationships with adults and peers, and in skill building” (ACA). What these parents
may not realize is that the time spent at a camp, away from familiar surroundings and people, is
the perfect place for a child to discover their abilities and further develop their individuality.
Although summer camps are often overlooked, they are a viable source for a child to experience
imperative life lessons.
I. One reason that attending a summer camp aids in child development is by improving
their self-esteem.
a. Confidence
b. Independence
2
c. Social comfort
II. Summer camps are also a great place for kids to learn important social skills that will be
useful throughout their lives.
a. Ethnic diversity
b. Peer relationships
c. Friendship skills
III. Another benefit of a child going off to summer camp is that they come home more
responsible.
a. Cabin area
b. Personal items
c. Leadership
IV. Summer camps also improve a child’s willingness to try new things and face their fears.
a. Activities
b. Adventure and exploration
V. Probably one of the least thought of outcomes of a child attending a summer camp is
environmental awareness.
a. Respect for wildlife/plant life
b. Camping etiquette
