Go to File à ModelsàSample Model àEarth Science à Climate Change
This is a model of energy flow in the earth, particularly heat energy. It shows the earth as rose colored, and the surface of the planet is represented by a green strip. Above the strip there is a blue atmosphere and black space at the top. Clouds and carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules can be added to the atmosphere.
Click Setup, then Go. (You can pause the model by clicking Go again, or reset the model by clicking Setup again. You can also adjust the speed of the model using the sliding bar at the top)
1) Let the model run for a few minutes and observe what is happening. What do the yellow lines represent, and what happens to them when they hit the surface of the Earth? What is happening to temperature? Does it stabilize, and if so, at what temp?
2) As the model is running, click Watch a Ray. What happens to your ray? What happens when you watch a second one?
3) While the model is still running, increase sun-brightness to 2.0. What happens to temperature? What does increasing sun-brightness represent?
4) While the model is still running, increase the albedo to 0.8. What happens to temperature? What does increasing albedo represent?
5) Now Add 50 CO2 to the model. What happens to temperature now? What about 100 CO2?
6) Now add a few clouds into the model and observe what happens. How do clouds affect temperature and incoming/outgoing energy? What happens when you add more clouds?
7) If you wanted to make the world as hot as possible, how would you do it in this model? How hot does the model of the Earth get (if it doesn’t stabilize how hot does it get after about 10 or so minutes)??
8) If you wanted to make the world as cold as possible, how would you do it in this model? How cold does the model of the Earth get (if it doesn’t stabilize how cold does it get after about 10 or so minutes)?
