There are many significant biopsychosocial impacts of end-stage kidney disease. People experience many symptoms such as fatigue, lack of sleep, confusion, skin color changes, headaches, and the inability to urinate. People may experience elevated levels of depressive symptoms like thoughts of death, suicide, anxiety about the loss of freedom, treatment outcomes, fear of making lifestyle changes, and the inability to enjoy life. Other patients may feel stressed by the thought of being a burden to others in terms of having to depend on family members or loved ones in daily activities like walking, meal preparations, or finances (White & Grenyer, 1999). Difficulties that patients with end-stage kidney disease face are countless because of their dependence on machines, doctor visits, and lifestyle changes.
As a part of daily treatment, doctors recommend a special diet to improve the work of the kidneys. The diet recommended includes avoidance of salty and processed foods, and to introduce lower potassium foods like grapes, apples, cabbage, and carrots. It is also important that while the patient is on dialysis, they are receiving the proper amount of protein. Along with each meal, patients should be taking vitamin supplements such as vitamin D, calcium, and iron. These supplements allow for the kidneys to absorb essential nutrients easier. In a typical week for a patient with end-stage kidney disease, hospital visits are required. Treatment involved managing the disease includes hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis is where machines are used to filter out waste from the blood and is done three times per week. This treatment requires hospital visits. Peritoneal dialysis is done every other night at home in a clean environment and requires proper training. Another recommendation for patients dealing with end-stage kidney disease is talking to a counselor and being a part of a support group with other patients coping with similar diseases. Patients should plan to talk to a counselor every few days to talk about their feelings or losses that came with the diagnosis (DiMaria, Leonard, & Jewell, 2017). End-stage kidney disease can be life-threatening, but with proper treatment, it is manageable. Finally, doctors recommend low-level strengthening exercises such as walking or swimming that do not raise blood pressure. This should be done in a period of non-consecutive days, and the intensity should be at a “comfortable push” level (National Kidney Foundation, 2019).
