Do the BJT based supply, include multisim images as described in the word documentDear students,
I hope you are all doing well, as you already know, the University decided to suspend teaching this week starting from today. Teaching should restart online from Monday 23 March. However, for this module it will not be possible to carry on with the practical work.
Based on this, the coursework will be modified as follows:
• I will not be assessing the physical construction of the circuit and therefore testing your design using the DC motor and the opto-detector will not be possible. Everything else remains the same so please complete your power supply calculations followed by the simulations.
• For those of you who have not yet started the simulations, there are 2 options:
o
Create a NI account and use multisim live (https://www.multisim.com/ (Links to an external site.))
For those of you who may want to download multisim on your personal laptops please follow the link (https://www.ni.com/en-gb/support/downloads/software-products/download.multisim.html#312060 (Links to an external site.))
The software requires a licence please use the following one issued by the university:
M84X69740
Please take care of yourselves and thanks for taking any sensible and responsible measures to keep yourself safe.
Kind regards,
Dr. R. Aviles
GROUP PROJECT – WEEKS 7-12
John Clifford West F2
Introduction
These notes provide guidance on how to go about the Group Project. They provide an overview of the steps to take but you will need to think about the details. If you need more information at any time then please post a query on the general discussion forum for me and the rest of the class to respond to.
Objectives of the project
1. To design, simulate and prototype a variable voltage power supply for a small DC motor.
2. To use this supply to vary the speed of the motor.
3. To measure the speed of the motor with an optodetector.
4. To compare two approaches
a. Variable voltage regulator
b. MOSFET switched supply
Overview of the project
This is a reminder of the overview given in the lectures.
Source and load specifications
You will need to allow for the following specifications, in addition to those given in the manufacturer’s data sheets on Study Direct:
The low power AC source (plug-top supply) provides a maximum off-load output of 11.2 V RMS (NB the small motor which you are using will not load this down significantly).
The motor can be driven by voltages up to 12 V. You should aim to vary the voltage between 5 and 10 V.
Project steps STEP 1
• As a group, decide which pair (trio) is going to work on which type of supply (BJT based or MOSFET based).
• Plan out how you are going to use the 6 lab sessions to cover all of the steps below and how you are going to coordinate activities and communicate with each other.
• Record your project plan in your logbooks.
STEP 2 (in pairs)
• Design the variable voltage power supply circuits. In this step you decide on the circuit layout and calculate required voltages and currents using the load requirements and also the known output from the low power AC supply (see above).
• For both supplies, you will need to design a full-wave, capacitor smoothed rectifier to provide an average DC voltage for the regulator circuit.
• For the BJT based supply, you should follow this with a feedback stabilized variable voltage regulator circuit.
• For the MOSFET based supply, you should follow the rectifier with a IC regulator circuit.
STEP 3 (in pairs)
• Select components and simulate the circuits.
• Use the ‘basket’ of components available and, if necessary, go round several loops of simulations until you think you have the right ones.
NB a few of the components do not appear in the Multisim database. You will need to use your judgment, and our advice, to find near equivalents.
STEP 4 (in pairs/trios)
• Build the circuits on the ELVIS II boards and test to determine whether you have got the right range of voltages on the output.
• I advise that you:
o build the regulator part of the circuit first, and use the DC supply from the ELVIS to test it;
o build the rectifier circuit next and check that it provides the required average DC output with the ripple you have allowed for;
o connect the two circuits together and test the full system.
STEP 5 (as a group)
• Connect the motor to one of the ELVIS boards and use the variable DC supply from the ELVIS to test the optodetector speed measurement system
• Test the full speed detection system with each of the two variable supplies in turn and compare the results.
Project records
• Keep full, dated records of your project work in your logbooks.
• If you save simulation or measurement data, make sure that you share the files with your project partners.
Learning outcomes
The following module learning outcomes are assessed by the report:
• Build, test and evaluate a circuit as part of a group in the laboratory
• Interpret component specifications, application notes and datasheets
Introduction
You will submit an individual report which describes your laboratory work during the Group Project. The majority of the report will cover the particular circuit which you and your partner worked on.
However, you must also present the circuit produced by the other half of your group and compare critically the performance of the two designs.
For details of the deadline and submission see the e-submission point in the left hand column of the Study Direct site homepage.
Word length – 3000 words (does not include equations, tables and figure captions).
Report structure
The report must include the following pages and sections. Number the major sections and sub- sections.
Title page – showing the title of the report, your candidate number (not name) and word count. Summary – describing briefly, but clearly, the objectives of the project and the basic techniques involved; states the principal results and conclusions; omits all inessential detail; stands alone i.e. must make sense without reading any other part except the title; is on a single page.
List of contents – with page numbers.
Introduction – introduces the project and its objectives; discusses wider issues of group working, ethics, health and safety, legal considerations; describes the technical background and equations to be used.
Circuit design – including the design calculations.
Circuit simulations – showing and explaining the Multisim simulations performed; including screenshots of the Multisim circuits and instrument readings.
Choice of components – explaining and justifying the selection of components used in your prototype.
Prototype construction and testing – describing the method of construction of your prototype, including any problems encountered, and the results of the tests performed to determine whether the prototype met its specifications
Full system test – describing the performance tests performed on your prototype using the motor; a brief description of the other prototype; and a comparison of the performance of the two designs.
Evaluation of results – a critical evaluation of all of the test results, with reference to the system design requirements.
Conclusions – a brief summary of how far the objectives of the Group project have been achieved and why; considers what could be done in addition, or differently.
List of references – a numbered list of the sources of information used in the report, correctly formatted according to the Numerical referencing system and cross-referenced in the main text by number.
